Indie Rock Duo Tommy Lefroy Detail Upcoming EP ‘Rivals’ With New Track “Worst Case Kid”
Tommy Lefroy, musical project of Wynter Bethel and Tessa Mouzourakis, came together in a series of sliding doors moments and necessity. With both artists 5,000 miles apart and facing cataclysmic shifts in their romantic and everyday lives, Tommy Lefroy came to be.
Most recently, the duo have released a third single, lifted from their upcoming EP, titled Rivals. Accompanied by a spellbinding video, the track is a crashing tune filled with guitars, all the while leaving the unique, almost haunting vocals at the forefront. A raucous thriller, the lyrics reflect on struggles with mental health and PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder).
Speaking about the track, the band shares: “This song personifies dysphoric thoughts as a sort of toxic love interest. It’s about how catastrophizing despite better judgement is much like returning to someone you know is bad for you. When you go through really intense bouts of depression, you come out of it feeling drenched, and when it’s okay again, ‘the witch is dead’, so to speak. We both struggle with bouts of sadness and the song is about getting through it.”
The video sees the duo exploring nature, with a supernatural feel delivered by the disjointed shots, juxtapositions between day and night, as Bethel and Mouzourakis roam and dance about the scene. Dysphoric in its own way, the visual is a perfect pairing to the song’s subject.
With the third single released, Tommy Lefroy have also shared details of their highly anticipated second EP, Rivals. Set for release on March 10th and featuring the already released singles “Dog Eat Dog” and “Jericho Beach”, the band shares that “this EP is a lot more confident. It’s unapologetic. We were joking that [the first EP] Flight Risk was like the flight and Rivals is the fight. A sense of badness about it! In many ways it’s about the relationship we have with each other, how we challenge each other and protect each other.”
Meeting in Nashville in 2018 and continually crossing paths at house parties, the pair finally connected when Mouzourakis went to see supergroup Boy Genius. After the show, Mouzourakis decided what they had what she wanted, and went on to a cover of their song “Ketchum, ID” on her Instagram story. Bethel responded: “Can we start a band?” And the rest is – as they say – history. The name Tommy Lefroy comes from Jane Austen’s real-life Mr Darcy – the original 19th-century fuckboy Thomas Langlois Lefroy – a man who broke the author’s heart. Tommy Lefroy’s mission? To subvert the broken woman trope and become heroic lead characters themselves. The band released their debut EP Flight Risk in 2021, and will be accompanying Samia on a handful of dates within Canada ahead of the new EP’s release.
