Indie Folk-Punk Artist John Beach Shares New Double Single “Liar/Be Yourself”

Los Angeles-based folk singer-songwriter John Beach originally found his footing as an artist in a punk band before hanging up his guitar to attend college and find a place in the corporate world. Living in Los Angeles stirred up his desire to create again, and Beach released his debut EP A Message To My Friends and Myself in June 2022.

With more music to share, Beach has returned with a double single “Liar/Be Yourself”. While his previous releases were more rooted in acoustic guitar and singer-songwriter, Beach aimed to find a more driving and punk-infused energy for his next chapter. Opening with “Liar”, the song quickly finds its legs with a foot-stomping rhythm, gradually bringing out indie rock and punk influences into the mix.

“I really wanted to express my appreciation for both folk music and punk leaning indie rock”, Beach shares. “With ‘Liar’ and ‘Be Yourself’, I believe we were able to accomplish that. From an acoustic intro with a lot of emotion to a powerful driven ending… I like how that sounds”.

Influenced by the likes of The Front Bottoms, The Lumineers, and Caamp, the pair of tracks work together to mix together the various styles, while allowing Beach to make sense of his personal journey to find his place in the world.

Beach shares, “It’s always a struggle trying to decide whether to go with a safe and reliable career in a corporate job or to go all in on music and do what I love. I noticed a lot of people in life struggle with this and finding a balance isn’t always easy. This is honestly what sort of framed the meaning behind Liar and Be Yourself. We wear many masks to get through this life to figure out who we really are. That’s where the concept of “Liar” comes from.”

Elaborating further, he adds, “‘Liar and ‘Be Yourself’ tell a story. A contradicting story of what it’s like to go through a transitional time in life. Times of change bring reflection and sometimes we realize we are not who we say we are. We may even be lying to ourselves and that is okay. Not good, not bad, it just is. Accepting that allows for change and genuine progress. That is what this project meant to represent“.
