REVIEW: Joseph Witty Finds The Strength To Encourage Positivity On Breakout Debut EP ‘Good Day Witty’
Rapper Joseph Witty dropped his debut single just last year in 2022, making a statement with “ChildHoods”. A year later and the emerging hip-hop artist has dropped his stunning debut 5 track EP Good Day Witty. Built on the premise of encouraging people to find the silver lining no matter what they’re going through, the new EP is an inspiring and soulful release from the underground artist.
Despite what his streaming numbers suggest, Joseph Witty has a commanding and sonic brilliance to his debut EP that draws worthy comparison to the early days of Vince Staples and New York rappers MIKE and Earl Sweatshirt. His steady and sleek bravado lets his words flow effortlessly, showcasing his articulate wordplay and poetic accuracy as he bridges vulnerable storytelling and optimism into his music.
Projecting the ebb-and-flow of the EPs theme, the tracks slow, boom-bap energy and soulful samples bring the energy along for the ride.
Opening with “Gifted Tension”, Witty points out the double-edged sword of being aware of the times and having an active mind. His calm delivery and rhythmic flow offers a welcomed contrast to the subtle nods to the anxiety that comes with being a functioning member of society and finding the strength to push forward.
Following the track list, “Living” and “Notes Of Elaboration” share a deeper personal look into the mind of Witty, as he raps about his journey. The EPs fourth track, “What It Means”, samples Labi Siffre’s “My Song” – first made popular in Kanye West’s “I Wonder”, crossing over to the soulful and more gospel-adjacent influences in Witty’s sound. Featuring rapper NewLanta CAP, the pair preach about the greatness of ambition, and reflect on the growth of their art.
Closing off the EP is “No Love Lost”, a poignant glance at the hip-hop culture and the importance of staying focused and pushing community first. Featuring emerging rapper Nxgxl, the song is an impactful finish to a commanding listen.
Having built a loyal audience as a gamer and streamer, Joseph Witty offers up his multi-faceted talent on what deserves to be an attention-grabbing debut release. Through five tracks, Witty focuses his strengths on his performance, understanding there’s no need to reinvent the wheel, instead finding a synergy from his predecessors to carve his own path as a worthwhile performer.
