Indie Singer-Songwriter Sister Ray Shares Vulnerable Title Track “Teeth” From Upcoming EP

Sister Ray, project of Edmonton-born songwriter Ella Coyes, recently shared new single Teeth, the title track from their forthcoming EP. Their yearning tone and unflinching honesty takes the spotlight in this latest release, giving a glimpse into the upcoming new collection of work.

Lyrically, “Teeth” paints vivid images, effortlessly pulling listeners into the story and emotions at its core. Coynes’ unique, smoky vocals carry the instrumental arrangement that builds slowly until the song’s close. The accompanying lyric video echoes the moodiness of the track; languid scenes cast in blue, fading in and out, glimpses of a home flashing across the screen.

About “Teeth” Coyes explains, “I wrote this song while I was feeling like some of my most fond memories I clung to and preserved through my own fantasy and lore began to slip out of my grasp. I felt  betrayed, as if I had dedicated my life to a false prophet. “Teeth” is like a supercut of nostalgia that morphs into whatever the mid-20s equivalent is of finding out that the tooth fairy isn’t real but hating that you have to know.” Having been lucky enough to see them live just a few weeks ago, they introduced the song as being in part about realizing their mom was a regular person – imperfect, not all knowing and having unique experiences – and not an omnipotent, always perfect being. It was an anecdote that really resonated with me, and seemingly others in the crowd based on reactions, and adds another layer to the message at the centre of the single.

Teeth is set for release May 12th via Royal Mountain Records and follows the 2022 album, Communion
