Punk Act Gottlieb Share New Single “Paper Tigers” From Latest EP ‘I Am This Place’
California punk group Gottlieb released their new EP I Am This Place at the beginning of July. Recorded independently from their apartment, the collection explores the modern American identity crisis. Its closing track, “Paper Tigers”, serves as the thesis of the collection, with its brash and hook-centric punk energy.
Drawing sonic influences from post-hardcore and grunge, the song’s exhilarating drive and blasting instrumentation adds to its anthemic commentary. “Lyrically, it was an exploration of a modern American identity crisis; when your home isn’t as benevolent as you’d been led to believe, what does that mean for one’s sense of self?
Paper Tigers was meant to lay out that conflict as blatantly as possible, and sort of be the thesis statement of the record. While the opening track/first single Venetian Hotels claims “the world around me is fake”, Paper Tigers was our way of stating ‘If my world was based on a lie, then I am a lie too.’ Hence the EP’s title – I Am This Place.“
