OSKA – Misunderstood

Vienna, Austria-based indie pop artist OSKA released her debut EP Honeymoon Phase this past weekend. The young rising star has a way with her velvety smooth vocals, sharing similarities to the likes of Phoebe Bridgers and Soccer Mommy, turning the song about feeling frustrated into a soothing, cathartic experience.

Harry Styles – Treat People With Kindness

As a surprise treat on New Year’s Day, fashion-forward pop icon Harry Styles released the black and white, choreographed music video for “Treat People With Kindness”. Not only is it an upbeat pop tune, but its a source of contagious positivity and an absolute pleasure to watch. Starring award-winning actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the pair accelerate the process of feeling good with their performance.

Beta Radio – Don’t Leave Me Behind

Wilmington, North Carolina indie folk duo Beta Radio released their new EP Afraid of Love this past weekend. The title track made its way into a previous From the Inbox before the new year, and their final single “Don’t Leave Me Behind” is just as deserving. Their gentle strumming and ethereal folk qualities have them in line with The Avett Brothers and early Bon Iver.

Rhye – Come In Closer

Toronto/Los Angeles-based act Rhye is releasing his new album Home on the 22nd. His new single “Come In Closer” is the latest taste of the project, and his ambient lo-fi sound really takes shape and comes to life with its crescendoing groove and reverberating foundation.

POSTDATA – Nobody Knows

Wintersleep frontman Paul Murphy resurfaced his solo project POSTDATA at the end of 2020, and he has announced a new album Twin Flames will be out March 5th. The second single from the album is “Nobody Knows”, an upbeat and spirit-lifting song about accepting your faults and finding ways to be happy without taking things too seriously.

You can hear previous single “Twin Flames” here.

Kelly Duplex – Shreveport

New Orleans power pop trio Kelly Duplex are releasing their new, self-titled album on February 12th, and their latest single “Shreveport” is helping to build the anticipation. With 90’s rock influences clearly at the forefront, the new track is all about accepting loss and finding a way to grow from the experience.

Black Nash – Alligator

After serving five years in the U.S. Military, Jody Smith decided to return to his roots as a musician under the moniker Black Nash. His debut album Black Nash will be out this February, and his new single “Alligator” is already one of my favourites of the month. It’s got a smooth, ’70s-vibe topped with a chorus hook for the ages.

Find it alongside more hits on my Starting Line-Up playlist.

Scoobert Doobert – Can’t Imagine Feeling Better

From a “rad” little beach town near San Diego comes Scoobert Doobert. Given his west coast origins, it’s no surprise his music is groovy, hazy, and chill af. His new single “Can’t Imagine Feeling Better” is a stoner-pop track that is as breezy as it is summery.

Fun fact: he is named after Scooby Doo’s real name. Look it up.

W!Fi – Clouds

Adrian Yancy is a new hip-hop artist from Pittsburgh that is a bit of an enigma. There’s not much about the guy, but one thing that is undeniable is he’s certainly making a statement with his debut track “Clouds”. Written about how he uses smoking to deal with his anxiety, W!fi’s humble flow goes along way, putting him well above a lot of the other “soudcloud” rappers out there.

slowthai x A$AP Rocky – MAZZA

UK rapper slowthai is dropping a new album Tyron (his birth name) on February 5th. He has had a monumental last few years since his debut release and the future is looking bright for him, too. Off the upcoming LP is “Mazza”, featuring A$AP Rocky. In true slowthai fashion, it’s gritty, drenched in his UK underground flare as he deals with paranoia and identity.

Oxymorrons – Green Vision

From the heart of Queens, NY comes Oxymorrons. Blending together hip-hop and rock, their hit single “Green Vision” was finally given a music video to go alongside. Featuring the band in their neighbourhood streets, the hard-hitting track is helping to redefine the outdated term of “urban music”.

Hear this and more on the Starting Line-Up playlist.

Alice Glass – Suffer and Swallow

Former Crystal Castles’ frontwoman Alice Glass launched a solo career back in 2014, after she left the group due to reasons regarding abuse from co-founder Ethan Kaths, and she will be finally releasing her debut full-length sometime this year. Keeping with her experimental and glitchy electronic sound from her CC days, Glass’ latest track “Suffer and Swallow” is an advancement of sorts, breaking into more gothic and metal-tinged elements, as she continues to work through her trauma with her music.

Sleepwoka – Together We Are

With the distant between friends and family still restricted almost a year later, for some, memories are all they have right now to explain their friendships beyond just text messages and phone calls. London-based/Ukrainian producer Sleepwoka wrote “Together We Are” as a reminder about the feeling of friendship, structured as a melodic synth-pop hit.

Wax Tailor – Just A Candle ft. Mark Lanegan

French producer Wax Tailor has once again delivered a spectacular music video, soundtracked by his dystopian, moody electronica. “Just A Candle”, featuring the vocals of Queen of the Stone Age’s Mark Lanegan, is an interstellar adventure lead by its stunning animation.

Wax Tailor just released his new album The Shadows of Their Suns on January 8th.

Vinok – Elephant Girl

Kyiv, Ukraine-based indie rock trio Vinok have a lot of power behind their lyrics. Coming across as a mix between Florence & the Machine, and The Black Keys, their new single “Elephant Girl” is a triumphant and arena-sized rock track that showcases lead singer Nathalie’s stellar vocal power.

Jon Foreman – Education

Jon Foreman, long-serving frontman of alternative rock group Switchfoot, is releasing his new solo album Departures on February 12th. Filled with hope of the coming years, the new album includes the anthemic single “Education”, as Foreman reminds us to do the things that make us happy.

Hannah Hausman – Will I Ever Feel Like This Again?

Indie newcomer Hannah Hausman has started off her 2021 with the bittersweet “Will I Ever Feel Like This Again?”. Written about her conflicting emotions towards a boy she knew she shouldn’t be with, the new song is a airy, indie pop hit from a budding musician.

Carly Taylor – Cardinal Cross

With her dynamic vocal power at the helm, Chicago indie singer-songwriter Carly Taylor has shared her astrologically-inspired single “Cardinal Cross”. Its gradual build both instrumentally and vocally is definitely engaging and exciting.

Virgil Abloh – Delicate Limbs ft. serpentwithfeet

Creative director, artist, designer, and DJ Virgil Abloh eats, sleeps, and dreams creativity. His new single “Delicate Limbs”, which features avant-garde artist serpentwithfeet. It’s engaging and cinematic to say the least.

Kae Sun – Bright Lights

Ghanaian-born, Montreal-based singer-songwriter and artist, Kwaku Darko-Mensah Jnr, or Kae Sun if that’s easier, will be releasing a short film/EP project later this year. His new single “Bright Lights” is a haunting and ethereal taste of what will surely be a cinematic highlight of the year.

Duwende – Fantastic

Move over Pentatonix. NYC-based a cappella group Duwende are stealing the show with their stunning new track “Fantastic”. Without the need of instruments, the group turn the a cappella genre into a sultry, hip-hop style.

Benny Atlas – How You Dare

UK R&B artist Benny Atlas made a splash just a few months ago with his debut single “Paradise“. His velvety smooth vocals are back with his latest single “How You Dare”, and if you like what you hear, there will be more music coming this year.

HOLYGOOD – Bath Salts

With their new EP Killing Giants coming out on January 22nd, UK genre-bending pop-punk group HOLYGOOD have shared their new single “Bath Salts”, merging together the angst of emo-pop with the electronic influences of electronicore and neo-R&B.

100 gecs x Linkin park – One Step Closer (100 gecs Reanimation)

Linkin Park’s historical debut record Hybrid Theory celebrated its 20th anniversary last year, and thanks to experimental pop duo 100 gecs, the festivities have extended, turning the hit single “One Step Closer” into a hyper-glitchy, nu-metal banger.
