Singer-songwriter Ruston Kelly has shared his poignant new single and music video for “Brave”, a emo-folk ballad dedicated to his mother. Paired with footage from his sold-out debut headlining show in Nashville last month and home-video footage from his childhood, “Brave” is a powerful combination of music, life, and emotion. He shares:
“Brave is a sword song. Writing it made me feel armed to face my lesser self. Because becoming a better version of myself requires taking account of the painful missteps along the way and fighting the anguish of facing them. And to ultimately (and hopefully) come out better than I was before. Taller and stronger. This is the highest achievement a human being can hope for, everything else is secondary.”
Kelly makes no hesitation with the song’s purpose, posing the questions “Who am I and how will I be remembered when I die? What will I leave behind”? as the opening lyrics. His rustic voice and folk guitar strumming continue to stir up deep introspection and vulnerability as the song moves forward. His emo-folk style is hypnotic, drawing in his audience with his delicate and deliberate musicality.
