From the Inbox – May 4, 2020

This is what procrastination looks like.

A larger than usual handful of singles from my inbox to yours, a day or two late. But hey, it’s now ready for you to enjoy. And remember, if the sun’s shining on a Sunday afternoon, that’s probably more important anyway.

If album reviews are more your style, don’t forget to read through our latest In No Particular Order.

As always, you can find Dusty Organ on FacebookTwitterInstagram, and Spotify to stay up to date on new releases!

And more importantly, if you enjoy anything you hear, remember to pass it along!

Bainbridge & Co. – Rewind

From the heart of South London comes ska/hip-hop/pop/rock band Bainbridge & Co. Compiling together their range of musical influence, the young band have been friends since high school and have been performing together for two years now. They’re working on their debut EP but in the meantime, their new single and video for “Rewind” is enough fun and energy to tie you over. Nothing like a great horn section, amirtie?!

This is a young band that’ll be making big waves very, very soon…

Cannon – Conversations

There’s a lot of artists coming into the scene capitalizing on the surge of neo-R&B / minimalist electro-pop. Sometimes its tough to to find the talent in a diluted pool of music, but every now and again it finds its way to my inbox.

The new single “Conversations” from South Carolina-based singer Cannon is one of those worthwhile hits. Mixing in hints of hip-hop into his R&B-pop sound, his new single has one heck of a chorus hook that will surely get stuck in your head. The best way to fix that is by hitting repeat.

Mt. Joy – Death

The concept of death has come up in conversation a lot more frequently recently. The mortality of humans is often an uncomfortable topic of discussion, but nevertheless, it finds a way to make an appearance.

Fortunately, music has a way of making it all less daunting and scary. And indie folk rock group Mt. Joy are doing just that with their new single “Death”. Frontman Matt Quinn explained the song:

“I’m not suicidal, but I think we’re constantly being reminded of our mortality and at times I’m at least aware of the peace that comes with death. I was hoping this song would remind people and myself that there are so many family members/friends here on earth that want to help us find our peace, and there really is so much beauty here, especially when you let people help you.”

With each new single release, I’m more and more excited for the band’s new album Rearrange Us, out June 5th.

I’m Glad It’s You – Silent Ceremony

After a tragic van accident killed a close friends/band mentor, Kelley Bader wrote his new album Every Sun, Every Moon. Drenched in grief and sadness, the new I’m Glad It’s You album is a hard hitting emo-rock collection that delves into the recovery process of losing a close friend. The new single “Silent Ceremony” is a crushing example, taking influences from Dashboard Confessional and Jimmy Eat World to open up about grieving and remorse.

If you’re up for some extra reading, Bader sat down with Stereogum for a great interview about the album and its tragic inspiration.

Summersets – Anywhere You Go

Sault Ste. Marie natives Kalle Mattson and Andrew Sowka have known each other for a while now growing up in the small town. Years later, they’ve come together under the name Summersets, inspired by late Saturday nights as the season of summer comes to its end.

The new duo have shared their first single “Anywhere You Go”, written as a love song about escape. As we’re all limited to only essential destinations, the new song is a melancholic reminder of far off travels, calmingly reassured by Mattson and Sowka’s charming vocal and guitar melodies. It’s easy on the ears, and easier on the heart.

ALITA – Too Close

Singing Mariah Carey at a kindergarten talent show is a fun way to start you music career. Seattle-born, L.A.-based indie pop artist ALITA realized she would one day end up pursuing music since she was six years old. Technically, we have no clue about how well her first performance went, but we do know she has spent her whole life building her repertoire and finding a way into the music biz.

Her new single “Too Close” is just her third release, and it’s a solid one at that. Drawing inspiration from artists like Julia Michaels and the 1975, her music is built upon lush pop textures and Top 40 hooks. Names like Robyn and Selena Gomez come to mind as her velvety smooth voice sings about the post-breakup blues.

TOBi – 24 (Toronto Remix)

One of Brampton’s most talented artists, TOBi recently shared the deluxe version of his debut album STILL +, featuring a handful of bonus tracks. One of which is “24 (Toronto Remix)” which features Toronto all-stars Haviah Mighty, Shad, Jazz Cartier, and Ejji Smith. Coming together to create a hard-hitting ensemble, “24” is the go-to track to put Toronto on the map as a hip-hop talent hub without needing Drake’s giant shadow in the way.

Sports Team – Going Soft

UK indie rock band Sports Team pushed the release date of their debut full-length Deep Down Happy to June 19th, but fortunately they’ve given listeners another taste of their ’80’s alt-rock inspired sound with “Going Soft”.

Plus, the new music video is a great way to get some live music footage in, reminding fans of their wild live performances. Ah, to be in a crowd again…

Jordan Lindley – Bummed

Missing someone? Got a crush that you just can’t wait to see again after all this is over?

Must be nice.

If you do, the new single from Nashville-based artist Jordan Lindley is about the feeling of missing a loved one. Sweet and simple, “Bummed” centres around a soft guitar melody as Lindley’s warm vocals shoot to the forefront. The combination of the lyrics and his voice make for a heartfelt and comforting indie folk tune. I would highly recommend adding it to a cute mix CD (if people still make those).

Milky Chance & Jack Johnson – Don’t Let Me Down

How often do you get to collaborate with one of your musical idols? Not enough, I’m sure. Fortunately for Milky Chance, they had the opportunity to do so with Jack Johnson. They met back in 2018 at a music festival and have had a few jam sessions together. From those music making moment comes the new single “Don’t Let Me Down”.

The song features the familiar electro-tinged folk sound of Milky Chance and their rugged vocals, complemented by Johnson’s voice to add in some colour.

Abby J Hall – Little Things

If you love the bright, bubbly sound of Carly Rae Jepsen and Taylor Swift, you’ve come to the right spot. Burlington indie pop songwriter Abby J Hall has shared her new single “Little Things” and it has everything you need for an uplifting pop song.

Plus the song has a heartwarming story behind it: “My parents were enjoying a reggae house band at a Caribbean restaurant. My dad leaned over to my mom and joked “if they play our song [“When I Fall in Love” by Nat King Cole], we’ll dance through the room.” As soon as he finished saying that, the first note of their song started playing; they both got chills and danced around the restaurant“.

Juke Ross – Atlanta

Switching gears from med school into music is quite the risk. Although he may not be running around a hospital saving lives, but the very talented Juke Ross is warming hearts with his soulful folk-pop sound – so it’s not all bad.

His new single “Atlanta” is a ballad about the city after moving there in 2016 from his home country of Guyana. The richness in his voice is similar to Ed Sheeran, turning his voice and guitar into one powerful instrument.
