Little Kid – Losing
Toronto-based songwriter Kenny Boothby started the indie folk ensemble Little Kid back in 2011, keeping things DIY and independent for a number of years. Now as a four-piece, Little Kid recently signed to Brooklyn-based label Solitaire Recordings and have announced their upcoming album Transfiguration Highway will be out July 3rd.
From the release is the second single “Losing”, a sweetly coloured tune rooted in Canadian singer/songwriter and folk origins. It has the jangling piano, swelling sounds of a Rhodes and guitar, making it a timeless folk tune mixed with the moodiness of indie DIY songwriting to give the concept of loss a comforting, yet melancholic anthem. It has the spirit of Neil Young and the Band but with a more contemporary feel à la Lumineers or Mt. Joy.
Written as a character piece about two different perspectives on loss, “Losing”, Boothby explains:
“This song tells two fictional stories about characters experiencing some kind of loss. In the first verse, the narrator’s friend loses their savings on a drunken bet on a dog race. In the second, the narrator expresses regret for choosing to leave a person they still find themselves in love with“.
Co-vocalist/banjo/keyboardist Megan Lunn shares the storytelling, lending her vocals on the second half to complement Boothby’s rustic style.
