Jah’Mila – Chant Their Names

As the Black Lives Matter movement surges across North America, Halifax-based Jamaican-Canadian artist Jah’Mila has shared her new single “Chant Their Names”, a powerful, politically-charged call-to-action.

“Systemic racism and heinous police brutality are serious issues that continue to plague the black community on a global scale. The murder of George Floyd sent ripples across the world, invoking activism and outcries from people around the world who are tired of the violent attacks against our Black brothers and sisters. Our team stands in solidarity with all who fight for Black justice and respect – this is long overdue.”

Jane’s Party – Change Her Mind

Toronto indie rock quartet Jane’s Party were inspired by nostalgia and past love for their new single “Change Her Mind”. And just like a photograph, the band’s simple hooks and breezy energy gives the song an almost tangible shape that holds rose-coloured memories of past loves. As they describe it: “The song takes us back to watching That ‘70s Show. The memory of hanging out with your best friends and navigating the intricacies of young love often becomes so cherished in hindsight. We hope you enjoy the nostalgia“.

Some Sprouts – Summer Daze

German indie rock group Some Sprouts capture the glossy, dreamy qualities of slacker rock on their new single “Summer Daze”. Written as an ode to that special someone that fills the room with sunshine, the shimmery new single is a mellow love song that is as heartfelt as it is chill. Borrowing the hazy guitars of the ’70s with the ’90s-kid feel of an Urban Outfitters, it’s an enjoyable indie rock tune that is perfect for any summer playlist.

ILS – No Luck

Portland-based hardcore punk band ILS are releasing their debut album Curse on July 4th and have shared their latest single “No Luck”, following up their lead single “Bad Parts“.

Mixing together West Coast grunge, post-hardcore, and noisy sludge rock, “No Luck” is a glass-shattering hardcore track that takes the genre to chaotic yet catchy levels, as the blood-curdling screams of frontman Tom Glose wails overtop heavy riffs and frantic percussion.

It should be enjoyed as loud as possible.

Jeb Bush Orchestra – Space & Time

Despite the name, Jeb Bush Orchestra aren’t here to talk politics. Instead, the Boston-based funk band are here to melt together the ’70s-funk era with the timeless need to dance and relax. Their new single “Space & Time” feels like a time capsule of retro soul, disco, and blues, tying together tube amp guitar solos and Rhodes-style synth hooks. Similar to likes of Vulkpeck and Busty & the Bass, the young band turn their virtuosic skills into inviting melodies and danceable hooks.

Cooper Phillip – Not Perfect

Russian-American pop artist Cooper Phillip comes from a family of accomplished and classical trained musicians, so it’s no surprise her music is chock full of talent. Her new single “Not Perfect” is a feel-good, empowering anthem about embracing one’s insecurities and turning it into strength. Combining retro-soul with contemporary trap beats, “Not Perfect” is a captivating nu-R&B pop tune that begs to be turned up to drown out the haters.

Buddy – Black 2

As a follow-up to his 2018 hit “Black” ft A$AP Ferg, Compton rapper Buddy has shared his anthemic new single “Black 2”. Swinging in tandem with the Black Lives Matter movement, the track is a hard-hitting response to appropriation of Black culture and the silence that needs to be broken during the fight ahead.

Kestrels – Grey and Blue

Halifax indie fuzz-rockers Kestrels are set to release their fourth album Dream or Don’t Dream on July 10th, making it the first since 2016 self-titled. Leading the way is the power-pop hazed single “Grey and Blue” which features guitar from J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. Written about being both carefully optimistic and vulnerable, “Grey and Blue” keeps things upbeat and charming while uncertainty slowly disappears and distorted, fuzzy guitars seep in.

Logan Richard – Everyday

Charlottetown, PEI native Logan Richard may be from a small town, but his music feels a whole lot bigger. The young indie singer-songwriter has shared his new single “Everyday”, once again serving up an impressive blend of R&B, blues, folk, and feel-good pop.

About the single, he says, “It’s my way of telling someone how much they mean to me. Though I couldn’t find the words to say it at first, I felt it. [It} is for rolling down your car windows, and singing along with your sweetheart on a warm summer afternoon”.

The energy of a young Bryan Adams, the swagger of John Mayer, and the Canadian songwriting of Bahamas all come to mind on “Everyday”. The song’s warmhearted, loving spirit comes through in his captivating vocals, cruising guitar riffs, and bluesy piano arrangements, making it a must-have for some summer lovin’.

flyckt – Spotlight

Swedish breakout indie pop artist flyckt has shared his debut single “Spotlight”, which will be off his debut EP Instant Gratification pt 1 later this year. His refreshing spin on the electro-pop genre melts together nu-R&B, doom-pop, and underground house to create moody, dense pop songs, “Spotlight” being no exception.
