Tami Neilson Channels Amy Winehouse On “You Were Mine”
After the passing of her father, Tami Neilson found herself categorizing life based on the transformative experience: “[My brothers and I] spoke about how we tend to use traumatic or life-altering events as markers in our lives and it’s suddenly split into two categories: ‘before and ‘after’. That loss became the way we measure time”.
From her February 2020 album CHICKABOOM! comes the new video for “You Were Mine”, as the Canadian-born, New Zealand-based country-soul singer explores the paradigm shift in cinematic fashion: “This video was directed by my brother Todd, who went full Tarantino, and the song was written with my brother Jay, born out of a conversation we had about life after losing our Dad“.
Matching her commanding vocal presence, the video’s dark and moody aesthetic plays to her strengths, washing over with an uncanny resemblance to Amy Winehouse in her performance, hitting spine-tingling notes as she belts out “there was before and then there’s after” on each chorus.
Outside of her personal experience, Neilson is able to connect the song’s message to the universally relatable pandemic: “This song definitely hits differently this year. I think we have all had that line drawn in the sand and our lives will never be the same.”
