Raquel Lily Explores The Sensuality of Love In Amy Winehouse-Inspired Single “Heartstrings”

Originally from the Philippines, raised in New York, and currently living in Georgia, Raquel Lily is no stranger to moving and traveling. Her latest release “Heartstrings” details a trip itself – though a bit more off the beaten path. The song was written about a mushroom trip, and the introspection that came along with it.

[It] occurred to me how much love and appreciation I have for someone,” says Lily, adding that it came “on the heels of exploring concepts of polyamory in a long time relationship, realizing this love wasn’t just something that could go away with some other side fling.” A slow and sensual track, “Heartstrings”‘s relaxed beats are matched with soulful vocals that fans of Amy Winehouse and Stevie Wonder will find fondly familiar.

Focusing on Lily’s idea of what to love, the lyrics are, in her own words, “so damn gushy and cute that I found it to be kind of disgusting and embarrassing.” In the chorus, she sings, “I am mesmerized, completely hypnotized,  I thought I’d let you know / you’re caught, caught in my heart strings, and it’s disgusting how much that I’m into you.” Though very sentimental, the honesty and vulnerability encapsulated in the lyrics is highly relatable, and makes the laid back tune that much more endearing. Admitting that her songwriting is a cathartic, emotional purge, it’s no surprise that the track is evidently introspective. As the song plays through, the bridge is brought to life by emphatic synths that bring to mind the psychedelic visuals and vibrancy that are typically represent trips, and brings a uniqueness to the song.

An independent singer, songwriter, producer, guitarist, and online personality, Lily also holds a degree in Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behaviour. She left the medical field behind in 2017 to pursue music, and has an upcoming  debut full length concept album I’m Leaving. The album narrates a coming of age, that Lily confides speaks to the truth that “everyone’s been broken from something.” You can listen to the mesmerizing single, “Heartstrings” here:
