T Truman Channels His Know-It-All Alter Ego With ‘Born To Be Right’; Shares Debut EP

Timothy Lanham, the keyboardist for indie rock group The Vaccines, has released his debut solo effort, but not without donning a new persona along the way. Performing as T Truman, the Australian musician channels the suavity and poise of ’70s piano-pop stars and international jet-setters.

Truman shared his 6-track EP Born To Be Right this week, and from the collection is the snazzy, disco-pop title track and its vintage music video. “Naturally the video needed a disco scene. So my mate and I cleared out a garage in Australia, put on safari suits and begged our friends to come.”

The result is a multi-mirrored, hazy, dance-floor craze that blends together John Travolta, Elton John, a little bit of Paul Simon, and a whole lot of pop-rock confidence and swagger. Playing along with its captivating qualities, “Born To Be Right” is about being confident with being different – sort of. As Truman would say, “I’m just having a joke about being a know it all and wondering why no one likes my company.” Despite being a loner with no one at his side, he certainly makes up for it with the glossy pop hooks.

The remainder of Born To Be Right completes the piano-pop hero aesthetic, playing up the slow-burning rock ballad on “Rock n’ Roll”, or capturing the hearts of listeners on lead singles “Loretta” and “Holiday”, with the former taking top marks as the release’s best.
