Electronic Artist Funny Factures Uncovers What’s Real With Hit Single “Longing” From Debut ‘Fake City’ EP

As the session drummer for indie pop group The fin., Koji Shibano has made his solo debut this past Friday with his EP Fake City. Performing under the moniker Funny Factures, Shibano dives into the electronic side of his musical influences, bringing out the colour and complexity of studio production with textured dance hits. Its bright and uplifting energy combines hints the tropical house of Sam Feldt with the layered electro-pop hooks of Odesza and Caribou, two major influences in his sound. Despite its colourful demeanour, “Longing” was actually inspired by neo-sci-fi series Black Mirror.

I made the song with, in my mind, the images I had after watching the episode “San Junipero” of the Netflix’ dystopia Black Mirror”, Shibano explains. “Longing” is a love song that depicts the painful feelings which can arise from the complexity of telling the difference between real and fake. It has this message that, no matter real or fake, the beauty of something like a sea landscape won’t change’.
