The Elwins Share Heartfelt New Single “Daughter Song”
The Elwins have shared another single from their upcoming release, IV, scheduled for release on October 23rd. “Daughter Song” tells a story that pulls at your heartstrings, and keeps your attention as it unfolds. A lovely example of musical storytelling, the single is a thought provoking tale of loneliness, loss, and being overwhelmed.
“This song was a bit of a trip for me,” says Francesco Figliomeni. “The lyrics and melody both basically came in one sitting and I felt really good about it. Even though I didn’t quite know what it was I was saying I felt really in tune with the emotion of it. We decided pretty early on in the process that we wanted to have some sort of string arrangement for it so we got in touch with the great Trey Pollard from Spacebomb Records whose work we have been fans of for a while now. In talking with him it really felt like he knew what we were going for and funnily enough in his description of his arrangement he kinda summarized the song better than I had been able to: ‘the swimming feeling of getting lost thinking about the complexities of life’.”
The lyrics, “Mama I fear that I’m losing touch with myself / cries the daughter whose mom starts to help,” introduce us to the song, igniting the soul-searching complexities. As it continues, we hear of how the mother is caring for the daughter, and how “there’s an air to the room that is hard to describe / there are tears in their hearts and fear in their eyes.” We hear about “a man of grace,” muttering a prayer under his breath and looking to share his faith.
Reminiscent of the Beatles’ song “She’s Leaving Home” in sound and story, “Daughter’s Song” comes to a culmination with the line “as I stop and I think about life / oh my mind it gets lost in the night / I am looking for someone to tell / I’m afraid, I’m alone, I need help,” before a wave of strings that has been steadily building takes over. Complimenting the lyrics, the instrumentation is purely composed of strings, giving the song a warmth and inherent coziness, in spite of the sadness lacing it throughout.
The upcoming album is self-produced by the band with a diverse sound reflecting influences from 70s AM-radio pop to mid-2000s alternative, and is a true showcase for the talented songwriters, this latest single being no exception.
