Montreal Artist Ellyn Wood Shares Her Entrancing New Single “Tangerine”
Montréal based artist Ellyn Woods spent 2019 in northern Québec recording her debut album. Her latest release, “Tangerine” is the first song she’s shared from the sessions. Unique in that all the vocals were done in one take, one afternoon, and not rerecorded, the track balances electronic instrumentation with organic vocals.
The dreamlike track showcases Woods’ down-to-earth vocals as she puts music to words originally penned as a poem she wrote while waiting to record vocals for a different project altogether. The lyrics flirt with self-doubt and the passage of time, with notions such as “all the feelings, deep or hollow / losing time until you don’t know what is real / there is only now.” The slight raspiness in her voice coupled with the arrangement bring an otherworldly feeling to the song that compliments the pensive lyrics – “the echo of self doubt is haunting me,” she sings as the beat synth beat pulses.
The verses are entrancing in their arrangement – softer, but still driven by a steady beat that carries throughout the track. They flow and build naturally into a more upbeat, synth driven chorus that gives a jolt of energy to the song, as Woods croons “Tangerine baby, it’s not yes it’s maybe.” As it comes to a close, the song naturally fades out, adding to the dreamy vibe.
With her debut album set to follow later this year, “Tangerine” is a strong first glimpse into the forthcoming release. Listen below:
