LA Indie Pop Artist KiNG MALA Returns To A Toxic Relationship On “If I Try To Find You”
LA based KiNG MALA – moniker of artist Areli Castro – is back with her new single, “If I Try To Find You”. Following the release of her single “Sugarblind” earlier this year, the new track shows listeners a darker side to the artist. Featuring moody instrumentation and sultry vocals, “If I Try To Find You” captures Castro’s turmoil and inner angst as she walks audiences through her story.
The track focuses on a relationship in which someone has been wronged, hurt by the person they trusted. It gives an honest perspective, detailing the emotions and inner turmoil that inevitably come with being involved in an unhealthy relationship. Castro confides that the song is highly personal, “I was thinking about a relationship I had when I was 16/17 with someone much older than me and wondering how that person is and where they might be now“.
The grunginess of the track complements her controlled, effortless vocals, as she carries listeners through the story, start to finish. Beginning with the infatuation Castro had for her partner in the first verse, she croons “seemed so grown, but I was just a child / everything you said was so profound”. As the song progresses, she shares pieces of the relationship, giving listeners a glimpse into the empty promises – “Said you had never met another girl that was like me, spilled your words like honey, sticky sweet but I believed.”
Eventually, she comes to the realization that the relationship is going nowhere, and is doing more harm than good, reflected in the second verse’s “Thought you were a storm that I could weather / I was blind babe, but now I see.”
While the relationship may be something of the past, the emotional track highlights that the experience is something that still resonates with Castro. As the chorus begins, she sings, “If I try to find you, well I’d be scared of what I’d do,” highlighting the frustration and anger that lingers. As the song comes to a close, Castro’s vocals stand alone, as she reveals “I still care.”
Unafraid to speak her mind and share her emotions, “If I Try To Find You” is a testament to Castro’s ethos to remain true to herself and embrace her own feelings in the hopes of allowing others to do the same. You can listen to “Sugarblind” here, and check out “If I Try To Find You” below.
