Former Repartee Member Meg Warren Debuts New Solo Effort with “Bomb”

Canadian artist Meg Warren may have just released her first single as a solo artist, but she’s no stranger to the world of music. Having started the band Repartee in 2009 – who won the 2017 Indie Music Award for Pop Artist/Group of the year – Warren has been involved in music for over a decade. Hailing from Newfoundland and Labrador, the now-Toronto-based solo artist released her new single ‘Bomb’, the first off her upcoming EP A Thousand Ways.

A wall of sound breaks through on its opening verse, as Warren brings listeners into the story. Walking through seemingly random, unimportant parts of everyday life, “I could be sitting at the table / I could be watching a commercial”, the meaning of the song quickly becomes apparent, as the verse closes with the lyric “and then you hit me like a brick wall.”

On the track’s inspiration, Warren says that “‘Bomb’ is about navigating painful memories or associations with a painful part of your past. You could hear or see one tiny reminder – an Instagram post, a casual reference in a conversation, a text – and it sets off this wave of internal panic or fear or shame that hangs over you all day.”  Revealing the true source of the song’s name, she likens it to “a bomb going off in your mind or your heart.”

Even with the somber, emotion driven subject, the track itself reflects Warren’s pop roots. The beat is driven by percussion and a repetitive keyboard melody, adding in a hint of the bittersweet sadness from the lyrics with a few minor keys. As the song carries through, the idea that “one text is all it takes” to unravel any progress made in moving on from a person is something many listeners will be able to relate to, given its universality.

Warren’s EP, A Thousand Ways – which she co-engineered and co-produced – will be released on November 13th. “Bomb” is the first single to be released, and you can listen to the track here.
