Tycho & rum.gold – Run Away

Grammy-award winning electronic artist Tycho has teamed up with R&B singer rum.gold for their dazzling new track “Run Away”. The unlikely pair make for a compelling combination, as Tycho’s dense, deep production style opens up a world of possibilities for rum.gold’s sultry, and airy vocal qualities.

Porches – I Miss That

Aaron Maine is the one-man band behind Porches. The NYC-based artist recently shared his fourth full-length Ricky Music back in the spring, and his new single “I Miss That” is the latest bit of new music. It’s simple but effective, working off of a basic hook and minimalist lo-fi production as he laments about letting something good pass him by. It’s weirdly relatable and enjoyable.

You can find this one on my “Starting Line-Up” playlist on Spotify along with 19 other of my favourite songs.

Kasbo – Lune ft. Vancouver Sleep Clinic

On October 23rd, Swedish producer Kasbo is releasing his new album The Making of A Paracosm. I’ve heard the full thing and it has already solidified a spot as one of my favourite albums of the year. No spoilers, but his latest single “Lune” which features ambient-electronic act Vancouver Sleep Clinic is another hit – this time building from a slow-burning downtempo verse into a euphoric big room drop. Kasbo is certainly a name to get excited about.

You can hear more Kasbo on my “Starting Line-Up” playlist or read the article here.

Famba x Jake Tarry – Know You Best ft. Alex Hosking

Canadian DJ & producer Famba made a name for himself with the EDM-pop hit “Wish You Well”, and now he’s back with another banger featuring Dutch DJ Jake Tarry and Australian pop singer Alex Hosking. “Know You Best” is a delicious combination of ’90s house and contemporary club ragers. The dance-pop synths and irresistible hook will surely take this tune up on the charts sooner than later.

You can hear it on my “Starting Line-Up” playlist (see the pattern yet?)

Bakermat – Bad Dreams

Dutch producer Bakermat shared his new full-length The Ringmaster this past weekend, and from the collection is the jazzy-electro-pop hit “Bad Dreams” featuring 7Chariot. Its melancholic and moody vibe is given a dramatic animated music video featuring the familiar dog world from previous clips. The story takes place in a sci-fi utopia before things take a turn.

Jasper Lotti – Take U There (Reloaded)

Dark-pop artist Jasper Lotti has come full circle with her new music video for “Take U There”. It was the first song she released from her debut album XOSkeleton and now the lead singler has been given a dazzling and dystopian music video to match. With similarities to the likes of Purity Ring and Grimes, “Take U There” also combines choral chants in hypnotic loops, building into a web of catchy hooks, dense electronic beats, and an eerie performance.

Miguel – Funeral

This song also goes back to November 2019, when Miguel dropped the industrial-R&B take “Funeral”. With the music video sitting on a hard drive for a few months due to the craziness of the world, he has finally shared the doom-pop video with the world. He’s certainly taken a different route with this one, leaning more into his experimental and industrial side. “Funeral” is weirdly commanding and with its bass-heavy foundation, its also an absolute speaker-blasting favourite.

Ghetts x Skepta – IC3

I’ve been cranking this one all week since it was dropped. UK Grime legends Ghetts and Skepta teamed up for the hard-hitting collab “IC3”, written about the police code for identifying Black suspects. They’re both guys who know their strengths, and they take turns leading the way with confidence and prevelence.

Downtown Mischief – Warm Bath Pt 2

Nudists rejoice.

Victoria-based funk collective Downtown Mischief strip down for their new single “Warm Bath Pt 2”. The music video is a summery suds-filled clip celebrating soapy fun, giving the swingin’ tune a fun visual accessory as the hip-hop funk band bring out the horns and groovy bass lines along for the ride.

Downtown Mischief are releasing their new album Galactic Mantis on November 13th, so get into some fun in the meantime with “Warm Bath”.

Surprise, surprise: this one is also on my “Starting Line-Up” playlist.

Cory Wong – Design ft. Kimbra

Keeping the funk train rolling, “Design” is the fusion of multi-instrumentalist Cory Wong and New Zealand pop musician Kimbra. After reaching out over Instagram, Wong met up with Kimbra in L.A. to record this song together, doing so in just one afternoon. In true funk fashion, it’s got snazzy guitar riffs, bouncing horns, and a dance-hungry hook that is hard to turn off.

“Design” is off Wong’s latest album The Striped Album, out next Friday the 23rd.

Aquakultre x Uncle Fester – LEMONGRASS

Halifax rapper Aquakultre has teamed up with fellow East Coaster Uncle Fester for their funk-inspired collaboration album Bleeding Gums Murphy. Named after the Simpsons saxophone character of the same name, Bleeding Gums is a nod to the genres of soul, jazz, and funk. The lead single “LEMONGRASS” is a feel-good blend of old school and new school. Fans of Shad will love this one.

Pat Williams – Tax Season

Toronto hip-hop artist Pat Williams has been working on his upcoming debut album for the past two years. He’s putting his finishing touches on the soon-to-be-named album, but has shared his new single “Tax Season” in the meantime. Blending together hip-hop, pop, soul, and nu-R&B, the emerging artist aims to blur the details of genre and style, creating something for himself, attracting fans along the way.

TALIA – colder

After putting her goals to become an actress on hold due to the lockdown, New York-based multidisciplinary artist TALIA revisited her music career and wrote her latest single “colder”. As a diary entry of sorts, the new song was written after feeling intense loneliness during quarantine, inspired by the sense of regret from losing a relationship. The minimalist alt-R&B tune features TALIA’s sultry, atmospheric vocals backed by a dreamy, slow-burning electronic landscape that brings out her strengths as a singer.

Caleb Giles – No Difference

As one the young, growing names in New York’s underground rap scene, Caleb Giles has been working tirelessly on his budding solo career. With his new album Meditations next week, the 22 year old artist has shared his latest single “No Difference”, providing a look into the album’s introspective demeanour, as Giles shares his voice over lo-fi, soulful samples.

T Truman – Born To Be Right

Timothy Lanham, the keyboardist for indie rock group The Vaccines, has branched off as a solo artist, running away as T Truman. His debut EP Born To Be Right hit shelves just last week, and the piano-pop artist also shared the ’70s inspired music video for the album’s title track. The song’s infectious energy and sweeping disco chorus makes for a groovy Elton John-esque bop.

Read more about the release here.

Eva Synder – Transparent

San Francisco-based artist Eva Synder wrote her new song “Transparent” from her bedroom floor. The colourful, unapologetic pop tune is one of the first songs from her growing discography. It’s got a healthy dose of ’00s-pop, and early T-Swift vibes, and “Transparent” is a strong start to the young pop stars career.

TANDM – Earthworm

Toronto indie pop-rock duo TANDM may be just two in number, but their talent and skill as multi-instrumentalists allows them to create a much bigger and brighter sound than just as a pair. Both classically trained musicians, Maxine Beck-Sinderby and drummer Thomas Franklin are releasing their remastered Reflections EP on October 22nd, and from the collection is the bright ALVVAYS-esque ear-worm “Earthworm”. Not only is it a groovy, catchy track that showcases the pair’s talent and chemistry, but the new music video is a fun, colour-coded accompaniment that also shows off the band’s personality.

Cristóvam – Setting Sun

Inspired by his grandfather’s massive radio records collection, and more modern pioneers like Bon Iver and Bob Dylan, Portuguese indie songwriter Cristóvam creates sky-touching indie pop, blending in elements of folk, and sweeping ambient textures for grandiose hooks. His new single “Setting Sun” was inspired by his beautiful home country of Portugal, specifically the Azores Islands. The accompanying music video features the stunning landscapes and nature of the islands, giving the single a cinematic touch as the shots of forestry, ocean, and volcanoes take over.

Frank Turner & Jon Snodgrass – Bad Times Good Vibes

This is a fun addition to the playlist.

Folk-punk songwriters Frank Turner and Jon Snodgrass got drunk and wrote an album about a decade ago called Buddies. Fast forward to this year, and the pair revisited their friendship for Buddies II: Still Buddies, which will be out November 13th. Part music, part talk-show, the album is a fun look into the personal life of both musicians, and from the release is the Zoom-music video for “Bad Times Good Vibes”. It’s fun, easy, and has one hell of a hook.
