Begonia Shares Theatrical New Music Video For Hit Single “Fear”
Winnipeg indie pop artist Alexa Dirks, better known as Begonia, released her Polaris Music Prize long-listed album Fear last September. One of the year’s most under-appreciated records, the singer-songwriter creates artful melodies that make way for her bold and dynamic musicality. Now, Dirks has shared the new music video for the record’s lead single and title track, “Fear”.
Once again, Begonia puts her rich vocal talents to the forefront as she lists off stressors and worries over a hypnotic and anxious rhythm. The song’s transfixing rhythm and rough timbre create a hypnotic underlying presence that is matched by the music video’s fast-paced, off-putting demeanour.
Director Ryan Steel shares, “Alexa and I met to discuss the song and she brought up the idea that she would be in a dark theatre with spotlights turning on. I spent a week watching Twin Peaks and in between each episode I would listen to the song around ten times when the rest came to me.”
“I didn’t want to make a video that was just like things popping out and me being afraid of the things exactly as I had listed them in the song”, Dirks explains. “I wanted something that was more mysterious, open ended, and a bit uncomfortable so as to match the energy of how I was feeling when I wrote it.”
