Folk-pop Singer Mabes Shares Lockdown Love Song “Caught Up”
UK-born and Nashville-based singer-songwriter Mabes brings listeners into her daydreams with her latest single “Caught Up”. Following previous releases of “Too Young To Love” and “Danny”, “Caught Up” is the third glimpse into her forthcoming EP release. Complete with a catchy chorus hook and paired with retro music video, this song is another strong addition to her repertoire.
The track is an easy listen, with a relaxed melody and light accompaniment that highlights Mabes’ vocals as she captures the all too familiar feeling of longing for your loved ones during pandemic restrictions. Her pop-folk sound is inspired by the likes of Laura Marling, John Mayer and Joni Michtell, while remaining uniquely her own through her emotionally raw lyricism.
Mabes explains that “Caught Up” was “inspired by lovers that [are] unable to see each other throughout lockdown.” Reflected from the start, the song’s first verse introduces the song with the lyrics ‘Counting down the days to see your face / Cause somehow on a screen is not the same / dreaming of the day when I can let my hair down and lay my head down on you.” Expanding on her inspiration, Mabes continues, saying that “‘Caught Up’ is about longing to be held and getting lost in the moment with that special someone, to make all the worries and darkness fade away.”
Decked out in a blue sparkly disco jumpsuit à la Mamma Mia style, the video highlights the dreamy sentiment of the lyrics. Washed in golden lighting, the video shows Mabes performing from multiple vantage points – on stage for the camera, in the mirror of her dressing room, and within an old school, 60’s prime time TV spotlight. Focusing on her gracious performance to a :studio audience”, the video is a way for Mabes to embody and honour women who paved the way for artists like herself, most notably Bobbie Gentry, one of the first female American singer-songwriters to compose her own original content. Wistful and nostalgic, the video is a perfect complement to the wistful tone of the song.
