17-Year Old Pop Star Evie Irie Drops New EP; Shares Single “Misfit”

Australian artist Evie Irie has released her new EP The Pessimist today. Picking up where her last EP The Optimist left off, the new collection is released in tandem with a new single “Misfit”.

True to its genre, “Misfit” has an infectious pop melody and a memorable chorus tying everything together, while an edginess to the track rounds it out to fit the attitude of the lyrics. Introducing the track is a heavy, distorted lead guitar that carries throughout the song, building into layers of instrumentation as it jumps into the first chorus. Irie describes the track as “a snapshot of a high-schooler in a bathroom stall, sitting on the toilet eating their cafeteria food alone, [turning] what their diary would feel like and how the food would taste in that moment, into a song, that would be Misfit.”

Seventeen year old Irie’s message of self-acceptance and embracing your uniqueness is easily digestible in the track’s lyrics. Admitting that “I’m not trying to fix it, I’ll always be the weird kid / Yeah I’m just a misfit”; the underlying sentiment of feeling different is celebrated in the track’s so-what attitude. Giving listeners who may feel out of place their own sense of belonging through the track, Irie sings, “Here’s to never feeling like you’re understood / let me tell you I understand you more than you ever could.” With a sound that bears similarities to Amy Shark and Betty Who, her confidence is all her own and comes through loud and clear with “Misfit”.

Where her last project, The Optimist, told one half of her story, today’s release of The Pessimist is the other half and gives listeners a grittier, more personal part of the overall picture. Listen to “Misfit” below, and you can stream The Pessimist just past.
