The Last Morrell Shares Self-Shot Claymation Music Video For “Picking At Stitches”
For the last six months, singer-songwriter The Last Morrell has been learning the art of animation to feed a lifelong fascination with the medium. He built a set, characters, and shot over 5000 photographs for his new music video, adding to the ballad’s personal and artistic merit.
“Picking At Stitches” is the latest single from his debut EP Sarcasm (you can find his previous single “The Party” in a recent From the Inbox post), and tells his story about battling depression as a young man.
“I wanted to address some feelings I’d had as a teenager and even as a young man that I’d never quite been able to process and put into words until recently”, he explains. From behind the piano, Morrell delicately sings from his soul, his cracking voice sharing his life-altering experience.
He continues,“Growing up is really hard and school can make or break a person. Picking at Stitches is about opening old wounds and forcing yourself to confront how your worst experiences have shaped you as a person, it’s therapy. And the video accompanies it beautifully I think, most of us can relate to those days where you feel unable to even leave the house. I kind of hope this video will make people cry, sort of.”
The accompanying music video is not only an applaudable feat in stop-motion animation, but also a heartwarming and dramatic depiction of depression.
Fortunately, the process has been rewarding, as the singer-songwriter concludes, “It takes an excruciating amount of patience to do stop motion animation but I learnt so much from Youtube and I was very lucky to have a friend who could lend me a very expensive camera for the whole process. It’s definitely a labour of love to say the least but I have a profound admiration for anyone who can do this professionally”.
