Overcoats Call Out The “Apathetic Boys” of the Music Industry In Latest Video; New Remix LP Out Now

Brooklyn-based indie rock duo Overcoats released their latest album The Fight earlier this year, and have dropped the remixed parallel this past weekend. Alongside, the pair of Hana Elion and JJ Mitchell have shared the new music video for the hit single “Apathetic Boys”, a direct criticism of the male-dominated music industry, but with a vibrant pop attitude to deliver it.

Featuring NY bands Plastic Picnic, Hypoluxo, Homeschool, Future Generations, Marinara, Wet Leather, and Eli Sundae, the video is a first for Hana and JJ as they take their place behind the cameras, flipping the narrative on their experience in the music industry.

Speaking on the video, Overcoats share, “We had the concept for the video pretty much from the moment we wrote the song. The music industry is obviously male dominated, from the executive level to the bands. Men are the gatekeepers of rock music, and not only men, but apathetic men. Male musicians often act like they don’t care and that makes them cooler–the tattered shirts, the emotionless expressions etc. When women care, it is deeply uncool. This puts us in a vicious cycle of having to try harder than men to get coverage, while having to appear that we aren’t trying. We have felt this cycle in the music industry as well as in our relationships (trying not to be too eager or too clingy). We wanted the video to be a commentary on how these decidedly male expectations permeate the genre.”

“Still dress like it’s 2004, haven’t you ever heard of stores?” they sing sarcastically referencing the careless attitude of men they’ve come across over the years. The song is filled with subtle jabs and smirking wit, as Overcoats deliver one of their strongest indie pop affairs.
