Boys of Fall Capture The Ups & Downs Of A Relationship In New Video For “Distance”

Detroit quintet  Boys of Fall have released the title track and lead single off their upcoming album Distance ahead of its November 20th release via InVogue Records. The new single blends the catchy melodies of pop rock with the aggression and emotion of post-hardcore and alternative rock, showcasing their enticing blend of the genres.

The release is accompanied by the emotive music video that brings the lyrics to life as the audience watches a relationship evolve. “Distance’ really talks about change,” says vocalist Michael Martenson, adding that they wanted to capture “the lengths we travel in our lives through so many situations that bring you to where you are now. [Distance is] very personal to all of us and was the most honest expression of who we are as a band today.”

The honesty pays off, culminating in a punk-pop song reminiscent of bands such as The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and State Champs and their ability to capture a story and emotion through their music before slipping into a roaring post-hardcore climax. The pre-chorus’ lyrics of “losing touch / slipping right through my hands again / and I don’t think you want to stay at all” builds perfectly into the chorus, with the emotion laden question “you’re a ghost passing through, so who was I to you?”

Even as “Distance” tackles complex and conflicting emotions, there’s a simplicity and maturity to the entire arrangement of the song that will draw in listeners. Electric guitar riffs, empathic drums, and heavy vocals are used to punctuate the message of the song, not over power it, and a softer arrangement opens and closes the track to give it a sense of full-circle storytelling. “We wanted to bring the listener in to understand the story and let the emotion build and lyrics carry you through the song,” says Martenson.
