Hip-hop Duo Cartel Madras Return With New Video For “Drift”
With their upcoming project set to drop sometime this year, hip-hop duo Cartel Madras, sisters Bhagya and Priya Ramesh, have released the foreshadowing music video for “Drift”.
Their forthcoming album The Serpent and The Tiger will bring their Project Goonda triology to a close, and for “Drift”, the pair collaborated with Toronto producer Dom Dias, bringing the dense, hip-house beats to the “sequel of sorts” to their 2019 track “Goonda Gold“.
About the track, they share, ““DRIFT” is about BIPOC women enjoying themselves and the fruits of their labor. In our music video we wanted to show a beautiful group of creatives and artists from various backgrounds dabbling in marijuana. We also wanted to show a group of women owning the means of production. Lyrically, this song exists in the Cartel Madras Universe and follows us doing what we do best; self-referentially discussing high powered, risky, good times. “DRIFT” opens 2021 for Cartel with new energy, big vibes, and ganja fuelled heat.”
Born in Chinnai, India, and raised in Calgary, Cartel Madras incorporate traditional Tamil music in their bass-pumping hip-hop style. Spitting bars about inclusivity and empowerment, “Drift” is a hard-hitting, M.I.A. inspired track that begs to be repeated (and if they make any more Fast & Furious movies, let’s hope this makes the soundtrack).
