Berlin Alt-Folk Act Mighty Oaks Share New Video For “Forever”

Mighty Oaks have shared a new track taken from their upcoming album being released on May 7th, Mexico. “Forever” is an upbeat love song, accompanied by an idyllic music video, filmed in the  old-school style of camcorder home videos.

The Berlin-based alt-indie band have a sound that brings to mind acts such as Mumford and Sons, The Lumieers and Gregory Alan Isakov. Originally from Italy, England and America respectively, their laid back instrumentation and charming lyrics will draw you into the story and feeling of “Forever” from the get go.

While they certainly have a mainstream appeal, there’s an elusive special something that shines through to differentiate their sound from other indie acts. Maybe it’s the harmonies in the chorus, or the backing vocals that fit so seamlessly through the song – or maybe it’s the wanderlust feeling you get when you listen to this particular track. There’s also the universality of how they’ve approached the lyrics and the subject of love within “Forever.” “[It’s] for sure like your classic love song, but you can read into it in different ways.” the band shares. “You may have just met someone significant in your life and you know that this person is special. Or it may be the very first moment you set eyes on your child, which is pretty indescribable. It’s realising that “wow – you’re part of me and I’m going to be in your life forever and you’re going to be with me until the day I die.””

Alongside the track, the lighthearted and down-to-earth music video is the perfect match to the lyrics. “We knew that this song has a classic sentiment, so we wanted to record it in a way to make it feel timeless,” they shared, a theme carried over into the visuals of the video. Opening with VHS tapes, the video features ‘cast’ introductions of each band member in old-movie style font and transitions, giving off a warm and inviting feeling.

Mighty Oaks released their last record, All Things Go, in 2020, and spent February and March touring before Coronavirus brought things to a standstill. It gave lyricist Ian Hooper the perfect opportunity to finish his home studio, which is where the band recorded Mexico. A new experience for the band, the home-grown sound (literally in this case) brought them back to their roots. “Recording at home takes the pressure off: our time was our time, we didn’t have to hire a big studio, nobody was expecting anything from us, because we were in a pandemic,” says Hooper. There may not have been expectations, but Mighty Oaks definitely delivered on this track.
