UK Emo Quartet I Feel Fine Unveil New Video For “SELFSAME” From Upcoming Debut LP

UK based quartet I FEEL FINE have had an exciting few weeks. Having newly signed with Venn Records, the emo math/punk band have announced the release of their debut album and dropped the album’s leading single and video, “SELFSAME.”

True to classic emo genre telltales, the vocals are emotionally charged with sweeping melodies carrying the lyrics. The instrumentation – unsurprisingly driven by guitar and drums – build throughout the track, matching with a mounting intensity in the vocals to match the band’s harmonies. With all four members sharing in the role of vocalist, there’s a full, uniquely warm sound to the song that you don’t always hear in the punk-emo space.

Speaking to the single, vocalist and guitarist Nathan Tompkins says that it ties into the overall themes of the album, sharing that “one of the main recurring themes on the album is my identifying my flaws, in the hope that by challenging them I’d be…quicker to dispelling their traces altogether. Writing the lyrics to [“SELFSAME”] was a real watershed moment in that journey…it occurred to me that these problems are not so new as they appear.”

Drummer Antoine Mansion added that the accompanying video’s content and imagery focus on the same circular idea explored in the lyrics. “The concept behind it was to take the viewer on a visual journey through weird and wonderful places…and come back right where we started.” Similar to how Tompson says that the lyrics explore how the same shortfalls he’s currently battling are the same shortfalls he was facing over a decade ago, Mansion compares the video’s imagery of infinite tunnels as “representing the desire to move forward in life but getting stuck in one place.” Made up entirely of stock imagery and pictures taken by the band and their friends, the music video is an animated collage that produces an eccentric visual experience that keeps you guessing what might come at the end of each tunnel sequence.

The Cold in Every Shelter marks the debut album release for I FEEL FINE and is set for release on September 10 2021, following 2018’s EP, Long Distance Celebration.
