Deanna Petcoff Signs To Royal Mountain Records; Falls Out Of Love In New Single “Failing Upwards”
Toronto indie rock singer-songwriter Deanna Petcoff has become the latest signee to the Royal Mountain Records family. Having been apart of the Toronto DIY scene for a number of years, her new solo chapter starts off with a glowing first impression on her new single “Failing Upwards”. Blending together the warm, lo-fi appeal of West Coast indie rock with a subtle, narrative-driven country twang, “Failing Upwards” is a broken relationship in disguise, donning bright coloured guitar riffs and the charming vocals of Petcoff.
About the single, Petcoff opens up about the real-life inspiration: “”Failing Upwards” wasn’t supposed to be a happy song. At the time I was trying to make a relationship work that clearly wasn’t working with someone I was really in love with. I felt like every choice I had made and continued to make was the wrong one and that everything I did just added more fuel to a growing fire. When I was writing “Failing Upwards” I was thinking about my journey as a woman falling in and out of love. This is a song about not being at your best, but doing better than before.“
Despite her intentions, “Failing Upwards” is an upbeat and lively song, juxtaposed by her reoccuring chorus hook of ” And I know you’re not trying to break my heart / But you’re doing a bang up job”.
