Electronic Producer Princess Century Details Upcoming Album; Celebrates Queer Love With “Stupid Things”
Known for her feature-length film scores, global DJ gigs, and production work with artists such as Austra and Peaches, Toronto/Berlin-based artist Maya Postepski , also known as Princess Century, is set to release her new album s u r r e n d e r on October 1st via Paper Bag Records. The 12 track dance record has been self-described as a “feeling record, not a thinking record”, and will be the first time Postepski showcases her own lyrics and voice, something she was unsure about initially: “It’s like opening up my diary and saying, ‘Have a look, there’s a lot of weird shit in there”.
“I’ve always been hiding in the back behind a band or behind a singer,” she continues. “It’s my first step into a more vulnerable and exposed place, which I’m finally okay with for the first time in my adult life. I guess I stopped caring about being shy or being insecure, or hiding who I am. I don’t like to be in the limelight, but life is short and I guess I should share who I am eventually.”
She has shared the second single and visualizer from the album with “Stupid Things”. Sci-fi worthy synthesizers, and vintage tones play into the ’70s new wave era with a ting of European underground, as she mixes together emotion with the urge to dance.
Directed by award-winning Finnish director Laura Hypponen, the music video aims to dive into the ebb and flow of queer relationships in many forms: “There is something very bitter-sweet about the track, the lost innocence of late Summer, so I wanted to create an uncynical narrative that celebrates queer friendship, community and nature as medicine for broken hearts. Something that’s genuinely joyful and full of love – a feel-good video for feel-bad times.”
