Rosalie Pays Tribute To Her Late Father On Powerful New Ballad “There Used To Be Four”
After losing her father over five years ago, singer-songwriter Rosalie wrote her new single “There Used To Be Four” on a whim, sitting down on an ordinary day before pouring her heart into the ballad. “I think grief is the trickiest emotion”, she shares. “After losing someone you love, you think that you are finally doing ok. But then, out of nowhere, it bursts out of you like a waterfall. Like a downpour you didn’t see coming“.
“There Used To Be Four” came together “piece by piece”, she explains, “It’s like it wrote me. It’s like the grief had something to say”.
Inspired by old memories and her father’s photography collection – something he would often share as a slideshow with an old projector, “There Used To Be Four” includes sound clips from home video footage overtop a delicate piano ballad. Her haunting vocal delivery (a result of years of recovery following an autoimmune disorder that took away her ability to sing), recounts moments in her past, as she tries to make sense of grief.
About the experience and song, she concludes, “This song is for my dad. It’s for my family. It’s for the little girl whose voice you hear. I want to do right by them and by her. I also hope that somehow, by me telling my story, it helps others who know this kind of loss. This song is for you. Grief connects us all in some bittersweet way“.
