Black Country, New Road Continue To Impress With Grandiose New Single “Bread Song” From Upcoming Sophomore LP

British indie art-rock collective Black Country, New Road have kept busy since their critically acclaimed debut album back in February 2021. Their sophomore is right on its heels, set for release nearly one year apart on February 4th, 2022 via Ninja Tune. Having shared their lead single “Chaos Space Marine” recently, they’ve followed-up with the orchestral and cohesive single “Bread Song”.

With a full line-up of seven musicians, Black Country, New Road take advantage of their depth of options, bringing together art-rock, chamber-pop, and folk into their music. On their latest single, the band took on an impressive task of simply playing together – no time signature, no cues, just playing.

“We wanted to do the first chorus with no time signature”, frontman Isaac Woods explains. “I went to see Steve Reich do Music for 18 Musicians and there’s a piece where a bar length is determined by the breadth of the clarinet player, they just play until they run out of breath. I wanted to try that with the whole band, where we don’t look at each other, we don’t make too many cues, we just try and play without time – but together.”

“Bread Song” was premiered back in February during an improv Bandcamp Live Stream surrounding their album release. Its continuous shift and change over its four-year conception finds a state of temporary permanence on the studio recording, still holding on to a spirit of improvisation and organic performance. Clocking in just over six minutes, the song builds and builds with cinematic melancholy and orchestral power, creating an emotive and striking release once again.
