Sampha & Lil Silva Team Up For “Backwards”
“Conflicted, not by what you say but how you say it” is one of the more introspective depictions of a backsliding relationship we’ve heard in the year 2022. It comes as no surprise that the enigmatic English wordsmith Sampha, fresh off two bonus additions to his legendary 2017 LP Process, is behind this level of introspection.
Assisted by delicately light production from Bedford-based creative Lil Silva, Sampha nestles into the sonic backing of “Backwards” seamlessly. The sound design of this track can only be described as disgustingly blissful, complete with whirring sirens, bewildering laser FX, and a driving four-on-the floor kick that surrounds a calm yet spiralling hook from Sampha.
On the track, Lil Silva and Sampha say: “‘Backwards’ is the feeling of alienation and constantly venting in a matrix you find yourself inside, whatever that may be… Restricted and feeling guilty to move forward, constantly going backwards mentally… I guess the song is about being in a never ending cycle and the heaviness that can bring on you…It’s a metaphor for that.”
