Toronto Alt-Pop Duo The Darcys Share New Music Video For “Washed Away”

Alt-rock duo The Darcys (comprised of Jason Couse and Wes Marskell) have shared the new music video for “Washed Away.” Coming off their forthcoming EP due this fall, the new single is a bittersweet guitar-pop tune about the turbulent nature of the current music industry for self-sustaining artists.

With syncopated guitar work that drives to an explosive and anthemic chorus, the new video encapsulates the title quite literally with the duo getting swept up in the California waves. Creative director Emma Higgins and director/editor Kassy Mahea captured the track’s message perfectly through the video’s dreamy aesthetic and storyline.

“Washed Away” is about trying to keep your head above water. The expectation for new music and endless content means sink or swim for artists like us. If you’re not always generating, releasing, and growing, it’s easy to feel like you’ll quickly be forgotten,” the band explains.

They continue about the video, “The lyrics tackle some pretty heavy stuff, so we wanted the video to counter that with something fun and literal to capture those themes. There’s really nothing more literal than watching us pretend to be totally fine as we struggle to keep our heads above water.

Director Kassy Mahea also shares, “the juxtaposition between the upbeat energy of the song and the darker undertone was something we were trying to exaggerate with visuals. We sought to capture a playful and stylized approach to a rather serious meaning. With poppy colours and somewhat childlike imagery, we challenged opposition with things such as deadpan gazes and unsettling moments of them being pulled under water. Luckily, no Darcys were actually drowned during the making of this video!”
