Canadian Alt Rock Favourites cleopatrick Unveil New Single “OK”
Hailing from Cobourg, ON, Canadian heavy alt-rock duo cleopatrick have been keeping busy. Between festival dates (Ottawa Bluesfest, Alexisonfire’s Born & Raised, and their own BUMMER Summer Fest), touring with Royal Blood and releasing their own concert-documentary, they’ve still found time to release their latest single, “OK.”
Self-produced by the band in the back of their tour van and mixed by hip hop beat maker/producer/rapper Jonwayne, “OK” is a distortion rich, riff-heavy and quick-witted piece. Crashing percussion comes alongside the heavy guitars, with the introspective lyrics fitting seamlessly atop it all. “We wanted this song to sound like it was recorded and produced using a sentient IBM computer from 2002,” shares guitarist/vocalist Luke Gruntz. “We digitally abused this song, chopping, degrading, stretching and looping sections with no regard for the rules.”
On “OK” cleopatrick explores themes of complacency, ignorance and trying to fit into a digital future. Feeling a bit chaotic at times, it arguably plays right into the themes at the heart of it all, and the at times overwhelming experience of clicking your way through the day to day. ““OK” is a song about asteroids (specifically referencing 99942 APOPHIS), evil computers, sneaker brands and illusory-worth of our digital personas,” explains Gruntz. “It’s a song about all the shit you have to click “OK” on these days. You do it so much you reach the point where you don’t really think about the meaning or implications of digital consent.”
Once again finding a creative and unique way to connect with their fanbase, the band vaguely alluded to new material ahead of dropping the single. They set up http://www.okokok.biz and tweeted it out with no other info, later announcing that if fans got it to 1 million clicks, they’d drop ‘something.’ Within the hour, the clicks had poured in and the pre-save for “OK” went up. The ticker is currently sitting at 6.4 million+ clicks.
“OK” follows this summer’s earlier release, “DEEMED”, a B-side from their debut album BUMMER, released July 2021. With no signs of slowing down, expect to see more from cleopatrick.
