Chicago’s THREEZERO Shares New Single “One Call Away” From Upcoming ‘EXPERIMENT 001-003’ Case Study Series
Chicago-based indie artist THREEZERO, real name Nate Russell, is set to release his creative three track case study series, EXPERIMENT 001-003. Following his 2021 album SEEING DOUBLE, Russell will be rolling out new music with one song releasing each month, as the 24 year-old musician shifts his focus to reinvention and recovery. Setting the tone is lead single “One Call Away”, featuring Atlanta-based rapper Rokkai.
Like a snake shedding its skin, “One Call Away” refreshes his catalogue with punchy bedroom hip-hop production and Kevin Abstract-esque vulnerability, as he tries to distance himself from a past love.
“‘One Call Away’ is about jealousy and wanting to be the perfect suitor – the ‘knight in shining armour’, THREEZERO explains. “Swaying back and forth between having envy for a former lover but also still being one call away – always still being accessible. Rokkai’s verse on the back end enhances that experience and ties the final lines together where he says “I don’t have you blocked yet, you still have my number, I’m one call away”.
“One Call Away” packages the feelings of empty optimism with self-destructive tendencies on a topic that is deeply relatable for many. Subtle anxiousness and emotion find its way into his vocal performance, as the production provides new shape and direction.
Effortlessly fusing together elements of Jai Paul, James Blake, and Mac Miller into his sound, the three track project will be rounded out by “Sweet Tooth” and “The Middle”, and will continue to capture his late-night, introspective songwriting style. Providing a narrative backdrop to the upcoming release, THREEZERO shares this:
[Patient 030 was experiencing heightened levels of jealousy, envy, and heavy turmoil.
Out of concern, good friend Dr. Asa Stephens suggested conducting a series of experiments and case studies on the subject to determine Patient 030’s mental stability.
Initial observations indicate Subject 030 is suffering the symptoms of “One-Call Syndrome.” Lack of sufficient interpersonal interaction has resolved Subject 030 to a restless, bitter disposition. In this state of anguish, the subject has appeared to produce a melody advertising his positive qualities to potential suitors; however, this is addressed to the void.]
