Liverpool Indie Group Clean Cut Kid Unveil Multimedia Self-Produced Music Video For “Inside My Head”

Liverpool’s lofi indie/folk Clean Cut Kid have shared a new single “Inside My Head” alongside a self-produced, cinematographic video. The release accompanies the news of their upcoming fourth album, HISS. Set for release on November 11th, “Inside My Head” is the fourth track to be lifted from the album, and sees the band examining the limits and consequences of dedicating their lives to a career in music.

Commenting on the track, frontman Mike Halls says: “As a songwriter, I’ve always had two opposing sets of feelings about what I do. On the one hand you’re very proud of, and almost defined by what you see as kind of a ‘gift’, and on the other hand it feels like the most pathetic and self obsessed existence. “Inside My Head” is me asking the question ‘what will I be as a person when this gift eventually dries up?’. It culminates in one of my biggest fears: that I’ll have let music rule my life so much I’ll miss out on having a family.

A laid back tune, distorted guitars and a steady bass line guide the song, the vocals placed neatly atop. The element of family is a strong presence in the video, which does feature Hall’s actual family. Seemingly straightforward, it shows various scenes of the group metal detecting – apparently the family hobby – with lyrics such as the chorus’ “After I have written all the songs inside my head, I’ll do some real work” only adding to the wistfulness. As it closes out, there’s a sort of grand reveal, words flashing across the scene that explain the true heart of the video.

Like all of the other videos for HISS, ‘Inside My Head’ was filmed on ultra 8 Kodak 50D film using a Canon 1218,” explains Halls of his concept for the video, which stars his dad and uncle, tying back to the worries at the track’s core. “My aim with all of the visuals for this record was to capture something that means a lot to me, in its purest form. Filmed on a beautiful day at Formby beach, with 2 of my favourite people on planet earth, and using only Michel Gondry style physical effects. It’s about as honest and full of love as a music video can be.

Recorded and produced in their custom-built analogue home studio based in their Liverpool flat, forthcoming album HISS was painstakingly and lovingly crafted by the band. The record sees them coming full circle and returning to the lofi roots that began their journey, seeing them debut on a major label in 2017. The new album is promised by the band to see them land back where it all began, with an element of comfort the band says you can hear in the album, which was written the winter of 2020.

Listen to “Inside My Head” now, ahead of the November release of HISS.
