Tim Baker – Survivors

After the success of his 2019 album Forever Overhead, indie singer-songwriter Tim Baker was in the midst of a European tour alongside Half Moon Run before their plans were cut short due to the pandemic. As is the case for many artists, losing the freedom of touring to the confinement of a home is a tricky thing to navigate.

Naturally, Baker sat down, wrote some music and revisited his vault of unreleased music. “I’ve always made twenty songs to keep ten, and the Forever Overhead sessions were no different”, he explains. “You’ve maybe heard some of the songs that didn’t make it, on the Side Door Sessions. Or you’ve maybe heard some other survivors at a live show. Well, some seemed so relevant to the current moment that they basically stood up and demanded to be let out. Being no tyrant, I dusted them off, smoothed their lapels, and resolved to send them on their way, on this new EP.”

Titled Survivors, the 5-track EP will be released on July 10th, but before then, Baker has shared the title track.

Lead by his rustic voice, “Survivors” builds from gentle piano chords eventually building into a choir of percussion, guitars, and harmonies. It has the cinematic simplicity of David Gray and the softer side of Radiohead but with Baker’s signature recipe of sincerity and calculated composition. “Survivors” is an uplifting song written about existing: “Just by being alive, you really are this incredibly unlikely success. I kept imagining how I got to be here, alive, and all of the ancestors that came before me.”

Tim Baker will play songs from the upcoming EP and others from collection via two upcoming ticketed online concerts May 29 and 30th via Side Door. Included in the ticket purchase is a digital copy of Survivors EP. As well, Plus1.org will donate $1 from each ticket sold to www.portage.ca for their bunkhouse initiative.
