Lulu Simon Finds Her Strength On New Pop Hit “Strangers”
Indie pop artist Lulu Simon is in the running to take the pop-princess crown with her new single, “Stranger.” An easy listening track characteristic of the pop genre, the song speaks to Simon’s experience overcoming a toxic relationship with a sophistication that carves out a unique space all her own. With a signature 80’s synth-pop sound coupled with lyrics backed with emotion, her sound is reminiscent of artists such as Carly Rae Jepsen and Betty Who.
The track recounts a past ‘situationship’, which saw Simon slowly losing elements of herself in trying to impress someone else. Ultimately, it was for the best, as it resulted in a newfound confidence and a track you can blast in your car the next time you need to blow off some steam. “Emaciated and insecure, I didn’t want to hurt anymore / but you smile, so I joke / you laugh, but I don’t / you lost me at hello” bring listeners into the story, where you can hear the lustre of her situation and infatuation wear off as she realizes the compromises she’s been making at her own expense.
Coming to a tipping point in the chorus’ anthem – “We’re just strangers now, let’s keep it that way”- Simon separates herself from the person bringing her down, and comes out stronger. Speaking to the single, Simon explains that she wants the underlying lesson to be that you should “love yourself and don’t settle, especially for something that is unhealthy for you for you or for someone who wants to change you.”
Despite her newcomer status, she has certainly established a strong foundation on which to build her musical empire. Describing her songwriting process as ‘emotional recycling’, Simon pours her personal experiences into her music, reconstructing her heartbreak into addictive melodies and sincere lyrics you’ll find yourself singing along to in no time.
