Lido Pimienta Shares Colourful New Video “Coming Thru”
2020 was quite a year for Columbian-Canadian Lido Pimienta. The release of her third album Miss Columbia was met with high praise, and is nominated for Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album at the 2021 Grammy’s and Album Artwork of the Year at the 2021 Juno Awards. Pimienta has brought track “Coming Thru” from the album to life in a newly released music video.
The video brings the single into the visual realm, with Pimienta front and centre, drawing viewers in by breaking the fourth wall to connect with her audience. Colourful and brimming with imagery, the video marks the third collaboration between Pimienta and Columbian-Israeli visual artist Orly Anan. Filmed in Mexico City, the characters depicted alongside Pimienta throughout the video are meant to represent what’s fitting to the viewer: “The characters could be your own conscience, anxieties or fears,” she shares. Beginning with an almost lullaby-esque tone, “Coming Thru” builds to include soaring horns to accompany Pimienta’s clear vocals, in both Spanish and English.
“Coming Thru,” says Pimienta, is “about surviving, deciding when to share and when to stop sharing, and understanding when one is being used.” They carry a strong representation, acting in tandem as Pimienta’s conscience and her sense of power. “The creatures next to me are…surrounded by the abundance of colourful fruits and foods that are to be shared ONLY by the ones who want to protect us.” A powerful track, the visuals of the music video only amplify the originality of her voice and the music.
The 2021 Grammy season marks Pimienta’s first Grammy nomination, and will see her performing at the premiere ceremony this Sunday, March 14th. The electro-cumbia and pop fusion found throughout Miss Columbia is both fascinating and powerful, bringing Pimienta’s individual experiences into the musical realm through a sound all her own.
