Aussie Punk Act Onslow Share New Track “Freddie Mercury”

Perth-based melodic punk act Onslow are just weeks away from releasing their debut self-titled EP on July 3rd via Greyscale Records. Following on from the warmly-received release of “Gauze”, the group have unveiled their emotive new single “Freddie Mercury”.

The group’s exciting and rejuvenating style of punk pulls together elements of post-rock, progressive, and post-hardcore, and on “Freddie Mercury”, they’ve almost cut it into quadrants, as the single opens with reverberating guitars and a shoegaze-like wall of sound. Gradually, the pace quickens, adding in more and more rock elements, before hitting their mark for a grandiose finale.

Leaning into its melancholic and capricious demeanour, “Freddie Mercury”, frontman Sean Harmanis explains “is about holding onto something that you know deep down isn’t there anymore. Our approach to the songwriting probably stemmed from our appreciation of post-rock. We’ve both always loved how well bands from that genre are able to build up to these giant walls of sound from nothing, and instrumentally we really wanted to incorporate some of that influence in the song“.

Bringing it to another level, the emo-rock music video completes the cycle with indoor rain shots and dramatic closeups for a well-matched visual accompaniment. Watch below:
