40 Songs of the Week – From the Inbox: July 26, 2021

Wow, look at all those songs!

Welcome back to another edition of From the Inbox, the best place for indie music round-ups. This week, I’ve curated 40 of the best new releases from the past few days (and some music videos) and am excited to share them with you!

Posey x Harry Terrell x Elizabeth Woolf – Butter

As more people head outdoors and back into the wild of society, soul-pop artist Posey has brought along multi-instrumentalist/producer Harry Terrell and singer/songwriter Elizabeth Woolf for their summery “love song for your sneakers” “Butter”. With plenty of feel-good vibes to go around and charming soul-pop energy, “Butter” is a melting goodie of warm brass arrangements and inviting female R&B vocals.


Olivia Morreale – Another Moon

From her recent EP Space Dreams, Los Angeles artist and producer Olivia Morreale has shared the colourful new music video for her bouncing hit single “Another Moon”. Playing into the fun-loving and charming personality of Morreale’s music, the music video was shot around Los Angeles, giving a West Coast feel to the soulful pop tune.


Tommy Newport – Vanilla & Light

Kansas-based bedroom lo-fi artist Tommy Newport has shared his new music video for his self-love single “Vanilla & Light”. Shining a spotlight on the day to day of so-called mediocrity, the music video intends to point out that everyone has their own way of being special and unique, despite the internal monologue saying otherwise. Newport’s hazy, chilled out style gives it a laid-back and introspective edge, holding off any sort of pressure.


Benny Atlas ft. shiv – Next To Me

UK singer/songwriter Benny Atlas has teamed up with Irish vocalist shiv for the love-obsessed R&B-track “Next To Me”. Glossy synths team up with funk-driven beats for a groovy and sultry hit complete with ear-pleasing alternating verses from the contrasting vocalists.


VÂN SCOTT – Don’t Know The Words

With his new album Almost Gone officially out over the weekend, alt-pop artist Van Scott has shared his new music video for hit single “Don’t Know The Words”. Serving as a tribute to songwriting greats Elton John & Bernie Taupin, and John Lennon & Paul McCartney, the upbeat song is a musical allusion to finding your perfect match to find greatness, lead by Scott’s bright and charming pop vocals.


BXB LOVE – Ignorance Song

Canadian-born, Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter and artist Natasha Pheko, also known as BXB LOVE, got to live out some childhood dreams of creating a rockstar music video for her latest single “Ignorance Song”. To the tune of gritty, alt-rock riffs with a punchy chorus hook, Pheko and her friends smash their way around LA in a crisp green convertible, as she sings about refusing to succumb to the oppressive powers that be.


Blanks – Classic Armstrong

Dutch indie-pop artist Blanks is known amongst his friends and peers as the “golden retriever” of music. His energetic and uplifting personality carries over into his music, inspiring feelings of nostalgia and positivity. His latest single “Classic Armstrong” is about those early days of falling for someone and the excitement it brings. Soundtracked by dance-y synth-pop melodies, Blanks goes through the feelings of young love in the accompanying music video.


CatchTwentyTwo – Night Is Done

Inspired by the vintage sounds of ’70s and ’80s pop, nu-R&B artist CatchTwentyTwo has shared his third single “Night Is Done”. A groovy bass line melts together with sci-fi synthesizers for a velvety, retro hit.


Laurent Bourque – EASY

Combining his love for hip-hop, modern pop, and disco, Toronto-based indie pop artist Laurent Bourque and longtime friend Loser Supreme wrote the summery single “EASY”. Alongside a video of Bourque adventuring around Toronto, the sun-filled song emits plenty of positivity and good vibes for an encouraging and optimistic anthem.


Junior Mesa – Pushing Away

From his upcoming EP Cirque du Freak, out August 13th, Junior Mesa has shared his psych-pop single “Pushing Away”. Despite its warm and upbeat charm, the song was about a diminishing relationship and the feeling of it coming to an unclear end. Adding to the song’s contrasting energy, the accompanying visual is a surreal and oddly funny clip featuring the misadventures of Mesa and his shadow.


Lino Camilo – TIDE

Hailing from Vienna, 21-year old producer singer-songwriter Lino Camilo has shared his self-produced single “TIDE”. Dense, textural production and percussive rhythms give an uneasy sense of chaos while Camilo’s smooth vocals pull through with an appealing charm.


The Grand Mess – Think Of Me

Canadian-born, Brooklyn-based electronic artist The Grand Mess has shared his new single “Think Of Me”. Written about helping someone through a depressive state while being in a similar dark place, “Think of Me” finds its strength with the James Blake-esque production and indietronica melancholy that comes from The Grand Mess’ slick croon and minimalist style.


Snotty Nose Rez Kids – Uncle Rico

Based on that one relative that lives in the past and talks about the glory days, the new track from Indigenous hip-hop duo Snotty Nose Rez Kids has a bit of fun with the idea of ego and its affect on the family dynamic. Inspired by Uncle Rico from Napoleon Dynamite, the video stars actor Cody Lightning and a few friends who take over the summer gathering.


STAYOUTLATE – Bodmon Vibes

Founded back in 2014, Tremayne, Scotty IV, Charlie Noiir and YoungWolf came together to form Canadian hip-hop collective STAYOUTLATE. With their debut LP Fabergé out now, the Toronto-based act have shared the latest single “Bodmon Vibes”, blending together Afrobeat, dancehall, and gritty hip-hop for a powerful and punchy track.


Geoblu ft. Songer – Greaze

UK grime artist Geoblu has teamed up with fellow rapper Songer for the new single “Greaze”. Incorporating the old school, fast-firing lyricism and the bold sound of the underground London rave scene with its ferocious production, the emerging artists deliver a sharp new hit as they tour around the city.


Carter Ace – The One and Lonely

Los Angeles-based rapper and producer Carter Ace turned the pressure of isolation into the expansive and striking new single “The One And Lonely” Created during the lockdown, the psychedelic hip-hop track combines the franticness of white noise and chaotic textures with his steady and hook-filled delivery for a captivating track, matched perfectly with the illusionary music video.


BLK ODYSSY – Hang Low

As his debut album BLK VINTAGE hitting shelves on August 27th, Austin-based artist BLK ODYSSY has shared his soulful new single “Hang Low”. Dripping with slow-burning soul and rounded out by crisp percussion, the new single is a velvety smooth funk tune bringing together BLK ODYSSY’s guitar skills and moody vocals.


Yellow Shoots – SALMA

Combining elements of R&B, electronica, and pop, Yellow Shoots delivers on his powerful new single “SALMA”. Off his newly released full-length The Green Album, “SALMA” is a part of his experience with synesthesia (the ability to describe music in colours), and captures the patient, lushness of the colour. Warm synthesizers, vintage-tinged guitars, and gated percussion bring out a psychedelic feel that’s echoed by his effect-altered voice.


mynameisleonidas – periergo

Enigmatic and mysterious masked artist mynameisleonidas recently signed to electronic label Kitsuné Musique, and has shared his new single “periergo”. The Greek word for “weirdo”, “periergo” is a trippy and off-centered piece that combines the density of electronic music with the airy, sultriness of R&B.


Jenna Kyle – Ojos

Making a place for herself in the male-dominated space of music production, Jenna Kyle has shared her powerful new single and video for “Ojos”. The New York-based artist brings together house beats with glossy, guitar-driven electro-pop for a dance-hungry and empowering new single.


Hope Tala x Young Franco – Mad (Young Franco Remix)

As her first taste of new music since her 2020 EP Girl Eats Sun, Hope Tala has teamed up with Australian producer Young Franco for a remix of her genre-bending track “Mad”. Bringing it to another dimension with his French-influenced house style and percussive production, “Mad” gets an exciting and groovy makeover.


NASAYA x MARO – I SEE IT COMING

Born and raised on the French Reunion Island off the coast of Africa, producer NASAYA incorporates his multicultural upbringing into his genre-fluid production. Collaborating with Portuguese artist MARO, the pair have announced a new project PIRILAMPO EP and shared its lead single “I SEE IT COMING”. The steady downtempo track builds with each verse, as MARO’s bilingual performance brings it all together with an elegant, effortless grace.


DAISY WORLD – SUNDOWN

LA-based artist DAISY WORLD released a pair of singles, building her discography as a stand-out vocalist and talent. Noteworthy track “SUNDOWN” jumps through styles and emotions, lead by DAISY’s stunning and breathtaking vocals as she goes through the trials of falling in love with the wrong person.


Afternoon Bike Ride – Terrace Rain

Montreal indie rock outfit Afternoon Bike Ride recently announced their upcoming self-titled debut album will be out September 24th, and have shared a double single “Terrace Rain / Grid Search”. Accompanying the former, the group have shared the candid music video to detail the chill, bedroom pop single, showcasing the three friends in their element.


PYJÆN ft. Elisa Imperilee – Moonlight

Five-piece jazz ensemble PYJÆN will be releasing their new full-length this September, hand have shared their third single from the release “moonlight”. Featuring vocalist Elisa Imperilee, the moody and lounge track brings out the virtuosic talents of the group as a carefully calculated backdrop for the guest vocals to shine through.


Dominique Simone – Sweater

British singer-songwriter Dominique Simone has shared her melancholic new single “Sweater”. Lead by her powerful vocals and steady production, the new song is an anthem to help push someone out of a dark place, empathetic in the emotion of wanting to slip into a warm sweater and hide away from the world.


Samia – As You Are

From her newly released EP Scout, singer-songwriter Samia has shared her emotional new music video for “As You Are”. Focusing on unconditional love, the song and video came from her experience during quarantine, and after everyone went home, who stuck around in her life.


Lorkin O’Reilly – Pelé Pelé

Watching old soccer footage while taking a bat became Lorkin O’Reilly‘s preferred way of relaxing during lockdown. The Scottish-American used it as a way to help subdue the feelings of homesickness, and on his new single “Pelé Pelé”, he reminiscences about the experience with a steady folk strumming and calm, controlled vocals as he compares himself to the athletes.


Eve Goodman – Wave Upon Wave

Welsh singer-songwriter Eve Goodman explores the healing powers of the sea on her pensive new single “Wave Upon Wave”. Her beautiful vocals float over a steady guitar strumming as she lets her voice swing back and forth on each chorus, creating a warm and hypnotic experience.


Wil Owen – You’re A Mystery

Bristol-based singer-songwriter Wil Owen has shared the latest taste from his forthcoming debut EP “You’re A Mystery”. Focusing on his smooth and bright vocals, the timid yet serene indie folk song builds on vocal harmonies and a rhythmic guitar plucking pattern, as he builds up the courage to let the weight of his withheld emotions off his shoulders.

Rich – Pull Apart The Pieces Of My Heart

On his new double single, New York singer-songwriter Rich covered The 1975’s “Somebody Else” and shared his heartbreaking original “Pull Apart The PIeces Of My Heart”, the latter stemming from his feelings of guilt while identifying as a member of the LGBTQ+ community while within the church. A stripped back performance of just his voice accompanied by layers of harmonies, Rich hypnotizes the listener.


Zeph – Are You?

 Maryland-based singer/songwriter/producer Zeph has shared her label debut single “Are You?” and its quirky new music video. Her upbeat alt-pop energy comes through on the song, as she lets her cinematic influences shine on the music video that depicts a strange romance with a mannequin.


joe p ft. Mothica – Baby Teeth

From his forthcoming EP due this fall, indie pop artist joe p shares his power-pop single “Baby Teeth” featuring Mothica. The upbeat tune is a celebration of growing up while simultaneously taking on the responsibilities of getting older. It’s back and forth style playfully brings to life the lyrics and contrasting vocals.


Matthew E. White – Electric

With his new album K Bay dropping on September 10th, Matthew E. White gets ready with a fresh haircut in his new video for “Electric”. The groovy, southern rock-tinged alt tune keeps things simple with a revolving guitar riff and hook, while tinny percussion adds a layer of retro-inspired funk.


KEG – Heyshaw

Brighton-based seven piece KEG have made a strong first impression with their debut single “Heyshaw”. Borrowing the charming, witty Brit post-punk of their ’70s predecessors, the revival tune dives into singer Albert Haddenham’s maternal relatives who spent their lives part of the RAF and moving aroudn the world.


Virginity – IamYOUareMEtoo

Florida emo-punk outfit Virginity are set to release their new album this October, and from the record the group have shared the ego-tripping single “IamYOUareMEtoo”. Written about trying to fight off the narcissistic, ego-driven parts of oneself, the witty and tongue-in-cheek tune takes on a deeper meaning with the accompanying music video.


Blunt Bangs – Silence Is Golden

Blunt Bangs , the brainchild Reggie Youngblood, vocalist of Black Kids, and Christian “Smokey” DeRoeck (Woods, Deep State, Meneguar, Little Gold), have shared “Silence Is Golden”, the lead track from their upcoming LP Proper Smoker. Merging the worlds of power-pop with gritty, DIY indie rock, the new track is a hook-filled tune with plenty of pep and energy to go around – all while dodging tennis balls.


The Keystones – Time Will Tell

Combining the ’00s pop punk days of Hellogoodbye and Motion City Soundtrack with a clean, contemporary indie pop flare Milwaukee alt-pop trio The Keystones have shared their new single “Time Will Tell”. An anthem for staying resilient and true to yourself, the song keeps a chin up with its upbeat energy and hook-driven melodies.


Young Winona – Killer Daisies

Los Angeles-based, New Zealand transplants Young Winona have shared their new single “Killer Daisies” and the green screen music video to match. Fighting off the insecurities of feeling lonely, the new track is a power-punk tune with an upbeat and bright chorus that holds the negativity at bay.


Conquer Divide – Messy

International alternative rock five-piece bConquer Divide have shared their powerful new single “Messy”. Combining influences from I Prevail, Paramore, and Asking Alexandria, the melodic hardcore track is elevated with the compelling lead vocals of frontwoman Kia Castillo.
