From the Inbox: Songs You Need To Hear (Sept. 13, 2021)

Happy Monday!

Welcome back to another edition of From the Inbox, the weekly round-up of all of my favourite songs from the past week. It’s been a busy September already with an astonishing amount of strong new releases, including a handful of amazing albums and even more amazing singles. As usual, I’ve compiled them into this fun playlist of 30 tracks, but if you want to experience the full FTI playlist, subscribe to my Patreon for exclusive access to the Extended playlist with almost twice the tracks, as well as bonus content.

This week’s round-up starts off with a shot of adrenaline and takes you on a journey moving over indie pop, R&B, hip-hop, electronic, and even a splash of jazz. Check out a few noteworthy highlights below, and access the full playlist at the bottom (or here).

I hope you enjoy this week’s collection, and don’t forget: if you like something, share it around!

Rom-Com – Spice Jar

Columbus, Ohio lo-fi pop-punk duo Spice Jar dropped their debut EP Rom-Com last week. Mixing together the melancholic tendencies of midwest emo with grizzly guitar riffs and punk vocals, the song’s title track gives listeners a phenomenal introduction that eventually flips into a punchy finish.

Amyl And the Sniffers – Hertz

Undoubtedly one of the most exciting acts to come out of Australia, Amyl and The Sniffers released their sophomore album Comfort To Me over the weekend. It’s jammed packed with unapologetic rock n’ roll, and feverish melodies that showcase frontwoman Amy Taylor’s show-stopping abilities. Their latest single and video “Hertz” sums it up all pretty well, with Taylor herself recklessly dancing around to the groovy rock hit.

Dahlia Sleeps – Too Good To Hide

ondon based duo Dahlia Sleeps today announce their long-awaited debut album, Overflow. Accompanying the album announcement is compelling new single “Too Good To Hide”, which have the pair bringing out lush instrumentation to match the song about falling into a vicious cycle from hindering mental health.

Avery Raquel – Helpless

Toronto-based singer-songwriter Avery Raquel has shared her new single “Helpless”. With its sugar-coated soul-pop energy and crisp instrumentation, Raquel lets her stunning vocals float effortlessly as she sings about holding on to a dwindling relationship.

Jungle – What D’You Know About Me?

For their new album Loving In Stereo, UK electronic act Jungle produced 14 music videos over a 5 day period. The one-shot, choreographed performances are stellar, and the tight deadlines are an impressive cherry on top. Their dancey, groovy musicality comes out once more for the latest single “What D’You Know About Me” and its flashy music video.

Check out an interview with Tom McFarland from Jungle here.

BADBADNOTGOOD – Beside April

Critically-acclaimed jazz trio BADBADNOTGOOD are releasing their new album Talk Memory next month. Exploring more psychedelic and improvisational avenues, their new single “Beside April” and its accompanying video are a cerebral and detailed effort that is cinematic and catchy.
