Multi-Instrumentalist/Animator Grimson Shares Latest Audiovisual Release “Heavy Machine”
NYC-born, Berlin-based songwriter/animator Grimson combines his two passions for a laborious and captivating audiovisual experience with each release. His latest is “Heavy Machine”, a follow-up to his break-up narrative established on previous single “Set Gently”, switching from melancholy to cold, striking, and ‘heavy’.
“This new single…pulls that visual metaphor back into the lyrical realm, making much more pointed accusations of cold and brutal behavior from that same ex-partner, likening her to a “steel submarine” that operates like heavy machinery”, Grimson shares.
Droning guitars, washed out vocals, and weighted percussion give the song a familiar ’90s alt-rock sensibility and full sound. Inspired by the likes of Elliott Smith, Oasis, Bon Jovi, and Radiohead, there’s a familiar density to Grimson’s sound on “Heavy Machine”.
And for the visuals, Grimson continues to find new ways to grow as an artist: “I have tried to continue to build out the visual world of my music, animating a disturbing and trippy visual accompaniment for the song full of distorted train stations and wintry landscapes. I’ve been working with this artist Kier Spilsbury from Australia who knows how to get great results from AI software. She and I have been able to conjure this amazing stuff that fits into the Grimson animated world, and seems to push it even further by creating stuff that I physically can’t. In that way, I guess I’ve built a relationship with more than one machine for this latest release”.
