Indie Folk Pop Artist Olivia Reid Turns Her Lucid Dreams Into New Single With “Nightmare Machine”
NYC-based indie folk-pop singers-songwriter Olivia Reid has shared her new single “Nightmare Machine”, lifted from her forthcoming EP. Originally started back in 2017, the new track has finally found its place in the world as a way for Reid to make sense of her lucid dreaming.
“I’ve always had very lucid dreams, and that lucidness can very quickly become terrifying whenever my dreams would turn into nightmares,” explained Reid. “The horrifying shooting in Las Vegas had just happened at the time, and thinking of what those families and survivors had gone through – the fear of shootings completely took over my nightmares.”
Her warm and expressive vocals fit its title, offering a dreamy and glowing layer to the song, contrasted by her turbulent lyricism and dense instrumentation. Strong influences of Wye Oak, and Bon Iver give the song a mesmerizing and ear-pleasing art-folk tinge, while Reid also makes space for a personal connection through her voice and lyrics.
Continuing about the song, she shares, “The next few years, especially during the pandemic, seeing the gun violence, racism, police brutality, and divisiveness that’s plagued the US — it all seeped into my subconscious, into these nightmares. While the song started as this sort of general plea for a good night’s sleep, I think it has become a plea for peace and rest in general.”
