Toronto Indie Rock Duo Ducks Ltd. Announce Debut Album ‘Modern Fiction’; Share New Video for “18 Cigarettes”
Toronto indie rock duo Ducks Ltd. (fka Ducks Unlimited) have announced their debut album Modern Fiction will be out October 1, 2021, on Royal Mountain Records / Carpark Records. From the record is the newly released lead single and video “18 Cigarettes”, which showcases the band’s fondness for jangly, lo-fi pop and crisp, clean hooks, as they tour around Toronto.
Written from the floor of vocalist Tom McGreevy’s old Toronto apartment, the new track “18 Cigarettes” was loosely inspired by a 1997 Oasis performance of “Don’t Go Away”, and features Eliza Neimi on the cello. “The thing I came to love about the song after watching that performance over and over again is that it’s a song that kind of tells on itself,” says McGreevy. “It’s a really raw emotional expression from someone whose capacity to talk about their feelings is stunted and they’re cut up about it. ‘18 Cigarettes’ is kind of an attempt to do a different version of what that song does.”
The lo-fi guitar and simple drum beat keep things light and open, not breaching into moody ballad territory, but instead offering the opportunity to be vulnerable with the bright chord progression of each chorus. Watch the Ali Vanderkruyk-directed music video below:
