Singer-Songwriter Colyer Bares His Old Soul Through Contemporary Strains On “Reset
It’s hard to be sure, based on singer/songwriter Colyer’s delivery, whether the line “either way it’s over” is drenched in closure or a continued sense of grief. What I can be sure of is that this taste of the artist’s upcoming debut album is syrupy sweet.
Steven Colyer is clearly used to his share of resets, having been “born in the South, raised in the Midwest, and now (located) in Los Angeles”. The inspirations of ‘60s soul and ‘90s shoegaze Colyer lays claim to come as no surprise. The reminiscent lyrics contemplate a retro sound of tip-toeing bass and orderly kick-snare competition.
What I appreciate most about “Reset” is the organic feel of every element, all of which the Lonestardom Records signee contributed to the forthcoming full-length set for a summer 2022 release. The twinkling bells, the hazy guitars, and the glistening harmonies fit together so neatly that you would have to assume they all came from the same mind.
