Satellite & the Harpoonist Release New Single; Announce Debut EP

Shawn Hall, one half of the acclaimed blues duo The Harpoonist and the Axe Murderer, teamed up with keyboardist Geoff Hillhorst (The Deep Dark Woods) percussionist Theo Vincent (The Boom Booms), and drummer Bradford Reed (King Missile III) on a rainy four day stint in Vancouver to create Satellite & The Harpoonist. During that week in January 2020, the four musicians wrote their 6 track debut Satellite Man EP.

Along with the announcement, the blues four piece have shared the jangling title track “Satellite Man” and its live music video. About the song, Hall shares:

Jonas Shandel and I set out to write the story of a reclusive guy living out a careless vision of a dream via his TV set, and the inevitable jonesing that one experiences going down that path. When Bradford Reed showed up to the recording session from NYC, he encouraged all the players to channel Bobbie Gentry’s approach to the song (sleepy & dusty). As the session went on, it ended up sounding more and more like ‘War’s version of Ode to Billy Joe, or Harry Nilsson’s Lime in the Coconut. Either way, someone was spending a great deal of time cocktailing with Sammy Davis Jr.”

The band certainly hit the mark with their cocktail lounge style. The steady rhythm and melody are rounded out by the bluesy piano stylings of Hillhorst, and contrasted with Hall’s rugged and smokey vocals.

Satellite Man will be released August 14th.
