Lowell – Lemonade

Split between Toronto and Los Angeles, indie pop songwriting sensation Lowell has gone from dropping out of college, to stripping, to beginning a career alongside platinum selling artists. With a budding solo career, Lowell shared her latest single “Lemonade”, a slow-burning piano pop alt-R&B tune that delves into toxic positivity. There’s something captivating about her silky smooth voice against a warm piano and string arrangement, bringing in the Gen Z R&B-pop elements of triplets and bass-y beats.

You can find this one on my ‘Starting Line-Up’ playlist.

Local Natives – Lemon ft. Sharon Van Etten

Another lemon song? Coincidence? Yes.

With their new EP Sour Lemon hitting shelves this Friday, Local Natives have shared their newest single “Lemon” which features a duet with the legendary Sharon Van Etten. While this has nothing to do with Lowell’s hit above, it’s still a silky smooth tune, this time about searching for connection in isolating world.

Jillian Lake – Walk All Over You

Friend of Dusty Organ and talented singer-songwriter, Jillian Lake released her latest single “Walk All Over You” this past weekend. Her still-to-be announced full-length is a collection of heartfelt folk, but with a taste of indie pop thanks to this fun, empowering track. Co-written with Jordan Klassen, “Walk All Over You” is a Sylvan Esso-esque song about standing up for yourself. You can read more about Jillian and her single here.

Plus, don’t forget to follow my ‘Starting Line-Up’ playlist on Spotify.

Meg Warren – Bomb

This is another track that found its way onto the site earlier this week. Newfoundland-born, Toronto-based indie singer/songwriter Meg Warren shared her powerful and anthemic single “Bomb” last week and has now followed up with its new music video as she takes the ’90s fuzz-rock song about past regrets out of the studio. You can read more about “Bomb” and Meg here.

Maja Kristina – Imma Show U

Swedish indie pop songstress Maja Kristina has been forging her way into the music world since the age of 17. Now at 22, she is gearing up to release her debut EP in the near future and is stealing hearts with her latest single “Imma Show U”. With all the fixings for a great pop song, “Imma Show U” is adding to her impressive start with its bouncing backbeat, glowing vocals, and flirty demeanour.

Belau – Risk It All ft. Amahla

Hungarian electronic duo Belau recently dropped their sophomore album Colourwave, and from the release is the glowing tropical-house track “Risk It All” featuring R&B singer Amahla. The song’s spacious and tropical influences find their match with the stunning music video, as the protagonist travels around breathtaking spots across Europe. (Warning: May make your itch to travel worse)

Bastian Benjamin – Confrontation

Dutch producer Bastian Benjamin made a compelling introduction to my music library with his previous single “Concrete”. On his new track “Confrontation”, he leans into the darker elements of his production style for a cinematic and industrial-inspired hit. Dense textures, and shadow-casting details give “Confrontation” an eerie, yet compelling edge. Stay tuned for his upcoming full-length Two Truths out December 4th.

Ape Drums – Delete ft. BEAM

Best known for his work as 1/3 of renowned electronic act Major Lazer, Ape Drums has dropped his new single “Delete”. While his name as a solo artist may not be as well-known, his music certainly speaks for itself. Incorporating Latin, dancehall, trap, and pop, “Delete” is an easy favourite for any DJ mix. Its infectious bounce and aggressive bass lines make for a hell of a good banger.

Dorian Electra – My Agenda ft. Village People & Pussy Riot

Dorian Electra is without a doubt one of the weirdest musicians alive. Not only is he blurring the need to label gender and sexuality, but he is doing the same with genres. Mixing together pop, electronic, hardcore, dubstep, and anything else he can get his Mountain Dew-covered hands on, Electra is making some of the most captivating modern pop music. “My Agenda” is from his latest full-length of the same name, and features the unlikely add-ons of the Village People and Pussy Riot for what I can only describe as chaotic and catchy.

Tokky Horror – Simulate Me

Speaking of queercore and contemporary pop, it only makes sense to follow with Tokky Horror and their new single “Simulate Me”. Showing the door to the old styles of punk, the UK trio are welcoming in the new age of punk with their electronica and hardcore music, all the while throwing in some pop into their virtual world.

Open Mike Eagle – Death Parade

Hip-hop artist/podcaster/comedian Open Mike Eagle went through a difficult year. Out this past Friday, Anime, Trauma & Divorce is a deeply personal and cathartic project collection from OME, as he dives into his soul to pull out some compelling hip-hop tracks. His latest single and music video is “Death Parade”, which is a politically-driven song about breaking bad cycles and habits, turned into an animated clip.

Rejjie Snow – Mirrors ft. Snow Aalegra & Cam O’Bi

Sticking with the hip-hop stream is the new single from Irish hip-hop artist Rejjie Snow. “Mirrors” features Swedish/Iranian R&B singer Snoh Aalegra and frequent collaborator Cam O’Bi for a glossy and toe-tapping tune.

Hope Tala – Crazy

London-based R&B singer Hope Tala is quickly becoming a household name following the success of her debut EP Girls Eat Sun, out back in September. Her gorgeous and velvety vocals come to life once again on “Crazy”, glazing over the sultry and whispering R&B tune. Written about letting go and enjoying the euphoric bliss of love, “Crazy” is a welcomed and warming addition to her growing discography.

TARA – self deprecation

Who says Soundcloud rappers have to be male?

After discovering my website from the depths of Instagram, San Antonio rapper/songwriter TARA snuck her way onto my radar with her single “Self deprecation”. The song’s production is immediately capturing, as TARA comes in, blending together trap-pop with her strong singing voice. With only four tracks to her name on Spotify, TARA is an exciting find (and what ‘From the Inbox’ is all about).

Witch Prophet – Tesfay

Toronto-based singer/songwriter Witch Prophet is a Short List nominee for the 2020 Polaris Music Prize (which will be announced tonight) with her latest album DNA Activation. Her latest music video is for the jazzy dance track “Tesfay”, inspired by her late grandfather. Bringing out her African roots alongside soul and R&B, “Tesfay” is an captivating and complex story and track.

You can read more about “Tesfay” and its inspiration here.

The Weather Station – Robber

It’s been over three years since Toronto art-rock singer/songwriter Tamara Lindeman released new music. “Robber” is the first taste of what’s to come, and the song is a stunning and compelling layered treat of piano, saxophone, percussion, poignant lyrics, and Lindeman’s affixing vocals as she tries to make sense of conflicting feelings and actions of today’s world. Adding to the artistic depth of the song comes the semi-improvised self-directed music video, shot in one day in the forest near her childhood home. The song’s building tension and growing chaos makes it hard to look away.

King Princess – Only Time Makes It Human

If anyone was looking for something released in 2020 but sounds and looks like it was teleported from 2000, pop rock songstress King Princess has you covered. Her new single “Only Time Makes It Human” is a mix of Madonna and S Club 7, and the weirdly-angled CGI music video gives it an early Sims feel, giving the song’s irresistible hook a nostalgic energy.

All Things Blue – Legend of Chav

California garage-pop act All Things Blue have a knack for fusing together colourful pop hooks with fuzzy, distorted riffs. Their upcoming debut album Get Bit is a steamy collection of all that mixed with themes on social issues, stupid exs, and life in general. Their new single “Legend of Chav” was inspired by a New Orleans midwife and Voodoo practitioner. Opening with a hazy intro to the likes of Waves and U.S. Girls, it eventually opens up into a psych-rock laden tune with a punchy vibe.

(If you like this tune, check out “Chad”.)

Lo Talker – No Champagne

Hailing from Athens, Georgia comes Lo Talker, the new folk-rock project from former Roadkill Ghost Choir frontman Andrew Sheppard. They made their debut earlier this week with the bittersweet “No Champagne”, and are expected to release their upcoming full-length A Comedy of Errors in 2021. Learn more about it here.

Judah & the Lion – Beautiful Anyway

As their latest single “Beautiful Anyway” continues to climb the charts, the Nashville based group have shared the heartfelt and fan-filled music video. Built on a foundation of positive energy and high-spirits, its an anthemic single about finding support and fighting through tough times. Returning to their hard folk-rock sound, “Beautiful Anyway” is an instant feel-good hit and its hard not to smile along with the music video.

Flor and the Sea – A Candid Lie

Flor and the Sea produce hazy, atmospheric new wave-infused electro-pop. On their new single “A Candid Lie”, the duo of Marc Aretz and Chaem bring styles of early electronica acts like Portishead and Goldfrapp into more shiny-edged indie rock settings. You can hear more from the band with their upcoming EP Kings & Queens out November 6th.

Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar – I’ve Got A Feeling

Samantha Martin has the voice of a lion. Alongside her band Delta Sugar, their new album The Reckless One is out November 20th, and features the lead single “I’ve Got A Feeling”. It’s a powerful and soulful number about enjoying the exciting beginnings of a new relationship. The cool, soft verses make room for Martin to let her voice out on each chorus, reaching new heights with her booming gospel voice. It’s raspy, funky, and completing entrancing.

Teen Ravine – Everyone

I figured it’d be nice to close off on this one from Toronto duo Teen Ravine. Originally off their 2018 self-titled, their lead single “Everyone” is given a makeover with a chamber quintet to become an even more heartfelt piece. The orchestral arrangements and charming chord progression makes “Everyone” a naturally rich and warmhearted tune, as Nick Rose and Dan Griffin sing about the struggle and fear associated with intimacy. It’s an easy piece to enjoy and all of its parts come together effortlessly.
